Thompson or Tom Wolfe. Aldous Huxley took some mescaline and wrote about it some 10 or 12 years earlier than those others. The book he came up with is part bemused essay and part mystical treatise--"suchness" is everywhere to be found while under the influence. This is a good example of essay writing, journal keeping, and the value of controversy--always--in one's work.

About the Author

Aldous Huxley (1894-1963) was an English writer and editor of Oxford Poetry. He interests included parapsychology and philosophical mysticism, and he is known in many academic circles as a leader of modern thought. He is the recipient of both the James Tait Black Memorial Prize and the Companion of Literature by the Royal Society of Literature. His many works include Brave New World, Themes and Variations, and The Genius and the Goddess.

Credible Argument for Responsible Use of Hallucinogens

In the first half of the book, DOORS OF PERCEPTION--originally a separate volume--Huxley offers a cogent and erudite argument for the use hallucinogens (specifically, mescaline) as a means for opening up the thinking mind to new ideas and perceptions, or even as a method for jumpstarting human creativity in the common man. Not only does he offer compelling historical precedents and sound medical research, but he also reveals positive details about his own personal experimentation with the drug. As is always the case with Huxley's essays, his various hypotheses are very articulately expressed and not easily dismissed.
The second part of the book, HEAVEN AND HELL--also originally published separately--Huxley introduces the idea that spiritual insight and personal revelation can also be achieved through the use of hallucinogens. (By the time he had written this volume, Huxley had added LSD to his psychedelic repertoire.) While just as articulately written and researched as the first volume, the idea that religious insight can be gained through drugs may offend some readers (theists and atheists alike), and the premise seems odd and contrived or expedient (was he trying to gain support of the clergy?) coming from a generally non-theist thinker-philosopher such as Huxley. Nevertheless, it is still thought-provoking reading for both professionals and amateurs interested in the positive potential of mind-altering drugs.

Are you experienced?

Huxley's `experiment' in The Doors of Perception was a right of passage for many in my generation, and it's interesting to have such an intelligent analysis of the experience. He does waste a lot of words on something that is indescribable, but it seems to have been written in the first blush of excitement. And Huxley makes some very sound observations, as well, that have probably helped many people reconcile their own indescribable experiences.

His conclusion that Mescalin and Lysergic Acid are relatively harmless for people in good health with an untroubled mind is probably objectionable today, especially among people who have never tried them. Looked at objectively, however, I wonder how this conclusion has stood the test of time. For myself, I believe he underestimated the long-term psychological challenges that cleansing those doors poses.

I remember something I read long ago from Philip K. Dick saying how difficult life is after you've seen God's face. The realization afterwards that you'd been forced back to a colorless, banal existence - a prison, if I recall the sense of what Dick wrote - must surely be considered one of the long-term psychological challenges that Huxley could not have fully appreciated when he wrote this book.

The feeling of being a prisoner in the normal world of perceptions might conceivably result in a hunger to return often to that `Antipodes of the mind' which, if felt too keenly, could cause permanent damage to be done to the mind's function as a `limiting valve.' This suggests to me that blaming acid casualties on a `troubled mind' may not be wholly satisfactory: some people choose to pack up their belongings and move to an island in Huxley's Antipodes, and these people can't always continue to function in the society their bodies continue to inhabit.

But the situation is complex: whether these `immigrants to the Antipodes' can continue to cope in the normal world is surely also a function of the society they live in. An American Indian tribe in the 1800's or Amsterdam today probably offer the mental émigré more of a chance for social survival than Riyadh, for example. One of the strengths of this book is to provide a good line of reasoning that explains why this might be true.

Heaven and Hell follows the extended, and appropriate, Blake reference. But to me this essay feels more like a long article you'd find in a magazine written by a cocky critic. Sure, there's much erudition on display and many valid aesthetic points are made; but the spirit behind it feels naïve: like many of the new ideas and associations that had formed in his mind hadn't had a chance to mellow and mature.

On the other hand, what seem like random observations to me may form a pattern I just didn't pick up on. Huxley was a smart cookie, and I wouldn't presume to speak authoritatively on his shortcomings.

Fantastic classic!

This book is truly a classic. It has a timeless quality and youth-like enthusiasm. Mr. Huxley does such a superb job at capturing the "feel" of the whole experience. He weaves wonderful prose with intriguing ideas. Not being an avid art aficionado, I was left a bit daunted with the numerous art references, but overall he has left me with a newfound interest in art.
Huxley touches on some good questions concerning psychoactive substances (and general "chemical vacations") and perception. I am intrigued with his idea of the brain acting as a sort of "reducing valve" for the whole of what could be perceived (experiencing "mind at large"). It is surely a quick read, but still packed full of philosophy, little tidbits, history and a myriad of other such though provoking ideas.
A great quote: "The need for frequent chemical vacations from intolerable selfhood and repulsive surroundings will undoubtedly remain." And Huxley does a wonderful job at explaining why this is so. This is a must read for anyone trying to understand the whole why and what for of hallucinogens, or for the aspiring philosopher, the general curious about life, mystery, etc. It is a necessary read.

Great indoor training workouts and readable cycling info

This is a terrific book for those interested in getting to be stronger on their bikes. Arnie Baker starts off with helpful information on the body and different kinds of trainings - leg speed, strenth/hills, endurance - not the typical drink lots, ride with traffic, and always wear a helmet bike book! Very readable with sound advice. A large part of the book is devoted to wind/magnet trainer workouts. He has specific workouts for different results. I have done a number of them and they have been excellent for building my strength and leg speed. I used to avoid doing indoor workouts so much, that I would loose my base fitness level in the New England snowy months. Now I look forward to my 2-3 weekly workouts of about an hour each - before this book I never lasted more than 40 agonizingly boring minutes. I look forward to continue doing these workouts at night, even when the weather gets warmer and I can't get out to ride during the work week. I've been telling my training partners about this book, maybe I shouldn't, so I can surprise them with my strength!

Excellent for beginning racers

I have read this book at least five times cover to cover (no kidding). Every time I pick up something new. For a beginning racer who does not have access to a coach or more experienced racers, this book is full of training and tactical information. Best trainer workouts I have come across and will really get you into shape. Arnie Baker does an excellent job of conveying his book.

Not for "all levels" after all

As a commuter trying to train for a century, I thought this book would be great. However, the part of the title "for all levels" is misleading. You must have a heart rate monitor, clipless pedals and an indoor trainer to even consider buying this book, as it focuses primarily on medium-to-high level bikers. It refers very frequently to racing season, has an infuriating section about training with weaker riders, specifically your girlfriend or wife, and says often that if you can't make such-and-such a goal, you're out of shape. This book is for YOU, the male, hard-core racer with seven days a week to train for cycling, but not for riders of ALL LEVELS.

Romeo's kiss.

Well, here's just one more reason to get your crazy cat lady fix in! Great story. I liked the ending. I do hope though that maybe she'll get out of the house more! Yep, I'd recommend this story.

Bilingual Arabic-English book with resizable fonts, for adults (one of very few such books)

This is one of the very few electronic bilingual Arabic-English books for adults with resizable fonts, without which it is very difficult to read. (The other such book I know of is Part I of the same series.) Reading it is a good way of practicing and improving one's reading skills and vocabulary in modern Arabic without wasting a lot of time looking up words in a dictionary. I think it is at an intermediate level in Arabic. That is, it requires a knowledge of the Arabic verb forms and a basic, but not huge, vocabulary. I won't say that the plot is fascinating (though I am only part-way through the book), but for the reasons I stated I think it deserves five stars.

Busch's G1X manual is more useful than Canon or Curtin

Camera manual writers like boiler plate, viz.,material that is general in nature having more to do with the practice of photograpy than the operation of the subject camera. Its allure is that, once written, it can be put in every manual with a minumum of editing. It's good stuff, informative and helpful, but . . .

Busch's Canon G1X manual is very camera-specific with a minimum of generic tutorials--and all of those closely tied to the camera. It has great black and white "roadmap" photos of the G1X's layout and lots of color photos taken with it. The writing is precise, crisp and light. His chapter 4, "Setting Up Your Powershot G1X," is a triumph of clarity and alone is worth the price of the book.

I guess I like reading manuals, having plowed through Canon's G1X Camera Users Guide, the G1X Cheat Sheet and Curtin's A Short Course in Canon G1X Photography (and earlier his G11 book), all before reading Busch.

This is the one to buy and read--cover to cover.

I was not satisfied with the digital owner's manual so I purchased this book. I find the book to be extremely useful....what the owner's manual should have been. The book is well organized and it is quite easy to find the applicable section when you have a problem. Buy the book...you will not be sorry!

Highy recommended for anyone interested in modern-day Formenlehre

Few times do I feel like writing a truly glowing review. There is always SOMETHING that should have been done differently, or could have been improved one way or the other. Therefore, when there are no obvious warts (or, like in this book, they are turned into something positive; more on that below) I have to avoid writing a pure panegyric eulogy. But in this case I have no choice: Pieter Berge has managed to create a brilliant tome, whose innovative angle will hopefully serve as a model for later publications.

On the surface, I can understand some scepticism: It only contains three essays, yet is sold as a hardcover book for a rather hefty price compared to its size. The brilliance of the project, however, is in the choice of participants and the form of discourse chosen. The article authors, first, are William E. Caplin, famous for his Classical Form: A Theory of Formal Functions for the Instrumental Music of Haydn, Mozart, and Beethoven, James Hepokoski, of Elements of Sonata Theory: Norms, Types, and Deformations in the Late-Eighteenth-Century Sonata fame, and lastly, James Webster, famous for his scholarly work on Haydn and all things related, but perhaps especially through his book Haydn's 'Farewell' Symphony and the Idea of Classical Style: Through-Composition and Cyclic Integration in his Instrumental Music (Cambridge Studies in Music Theory and Analysis). Given the three article limit (and as we'll see there is a good reason for it) the cast couldn't have been better: all three are at the cutting edge of modern day Formenlehre; in fact, the first two are the chief exponents of the Formenlehre tradition in the last decade or two, and for anyone even passingly familiar with the field, Webster's works should speak for themselves as to his relevancy.

Just as important is the form the book has been given. After each essay, each writer is given an opportunity to criticise the content of the previous article. Everyone who has been to musicology symposiums or the like know how interesting such exchanges between the finest minds of the field can be, yet they are always limited by time schedules and the nature of verbal discourse. This book gives each writer an extended opportunity to critique far beyond what one could do during a seminar or the like. After the two replies, the original author is given the opportunity to reply to his colleagues. As the back of the book says the nature of these replies varies from the gently critical to the overtly polemical; one really get the sense of the different personalities of the writers. Neither are the blemishes in the arguments softened out; some comments that probably weren't well enough thought through are chastised thoroughly. How many dogmatists can dance on the head of a pin?

These are distinguished authors, and specialists may find unique insights in this symposium. However, as a layman, I was reminded of those polemics between philosophers which get nowhere because they are using different words to mean the same thing and the same word to mean different things. At least these authors remain civil. The works under discussion are familiar and accessible, such as Beethoven's Pastoral Symphony, but they all seem to be defective in that they don't conform in every particular to some doctrine. I am willing to consider the possibility that it is the doctrine which needs fixing.

Michael P. Nichols is a professor at the College of William and Mary. Dr. Nichols received his B.A. from the University of WIsconsin, and his P.h.D. from the University of Rochester. A Strong and Well Constructed Text

As an instructor in Family Systems, I feel that Nichols & Schwartz have put together a very comprehensive overview of Family Therapy. Although at times it is somewhat tedious, the historical approach taken in this book allows a student or scholar the opportunity to piece together the different ways that family therapy is seen. I feel that the section on Cognitive-Behavioral Family Therapy did demonstrate a certain level of author bias, but this is understandable, given the authors backgrounds. Finally, there does seem to be some misunderstanding of individual approaches and a need for more multicultural issues to be included. Overall, this is a strong text to introduce a student to the field of Family Therapy.

A Very Comprehensive and Thoughtful Text on Family Therapy

I have tried several books on family therapy as texts for my graduate course on Family and Couple therapy. This book is superior to other books that I have tried. The authors explain theoretical positions clearly and most importantly organize this vast area of social science into a well-organized discussion that is interesting and easy to follow. It is a serious text rather than convoluted and I'm thankful a text such as this for my students. Dr. Deborah Khoshaba

How is it possible for a book of such physically poor quality to cost $100?

This textbook is pretty small, at a huge price. The pages are so thin I can literally read the backside and front of the next page through the paper. The quality of the printing is also terrible. The printing is newspaper quality and the grayscale and show-through makes the whole book look like it was faxed or photocopied in b&w. It's very tiring on the eyes to read.

About the Author
Aleksandr Sergeyevich Pushkin, b. June 6 (N.S.), 1799, d. Feb. 10 (N.S.), 1837, was Russia's greatest poet. His use of the vernacular as the language of poetry freed Russian writing from the constraints of tradition and set new literary standards for novelists and poets, and his preference for subjects from history and folklore brought fresh vitality to Russian literature. Anthony Briggs, Professor of Russian at Birmingham University, Senior Research Fellow at Bristol University, is a well-known writer and broadcaster on Russian cultural affairs and European poetry. His recent translation of War and Peace was critically acclaimed. Among his many publications are six editions in the Everyman's Poetry series.

Good, fast fun

This book of poems can be read quickly. It includes English translations by up to ten other poets, but 33 of the 60 poems in this book have been translated by A. D. P. Briggs. Briggs also revised the translation of the 57th. Poem 16, "The Caucasus" is credited to F. Cornford on pages xxi and 19, but the Acknowledgements on page 104 credits a book, POEMS FROM THE RUSSIAN (1943), "trans. Frances Cornfield and Esther Polianowski." Of the Pushkin poems translated by C. M. Bowra in a book from 1948, eight poems are included in this book.
The Contents lists the titles of the poems, and the Introduction explains poetic qualities which the translations in this volume attempt to match, "partly to ensure that interesting formal properties like these are not lost." (p. xv). The first paragraph on page xvi attempts to show how the poems "are grouped roughly thematically," into personal, the natural world, poetry, love, some poems of ideas, for the first half of the book. The longer works in the final portion of the book include the concluding stanzas of YEVGENY ONEGIN, Chapter 8, Stanzas 33-51.
A few things about this book seemed British to me. The word which made the least sense to me was "judder," in the poem "The Waggon of Life," on page 39. If the word was made up to produce a rhyme, the line it was in would have made more sense if it had ended with the common word, shudder:
Feeling the waggon shake and shudder.
The stanza doesn't end with: "We cry, `Slow down you silly buggy!"

This book of poems can be read quickly. It includes English translations by nine other poets, but most (33) of the 60 poems in this book have been translated by A. D. P. Briggs, who has devoted four books to Pushkin and has also edited four other volumes in the Everyman's Poetry series. Briggs also revised Chapter 8 of Oliver Elton's translation of Yevgeny Onegin, which he describes in the Introduction as, "A few stanzas from the end of the novel are included here in order to give a general impression of how the novel works." (p. xvii). Poem 16, "The Caucasus" is credited to F. Cornford on pages xxi and 19, but the Acknowledgements on page 104 credits a book, POEMS FROM THE RUSSIAN (1943), "trans. Frances Cornfield [this mistake might be due to the enormous number of actual cornfields that currently exist on this planet] and Esther Polianowski." Of the Pushkin poems translated by C. M. Bowra in a book from 1948, eight poems are included in this book.

The poems "Remembrance" and "Elegy" are mentioned as examples of a Pushkinian philosophy of life. Thoughts "Settle in limpid twilight languidly distilled," as the third line of the poem "Remembrance" puts it. Pushkin is capable of other feats, and the introduction observes that one long poem, "(known in Russian as `Gavriiliada' after the angel Gabriel) is an overtly sacreligious re-enactment of several Bible stories (Adam and Eve, Joseph and Mary, the Annunciation, etc.) run together into an extended sexual romp." (p. xviii). This kind of thing is usually considered a catastrophe, as far as serious philosophy is concerned, and "In its day Pushkin could not acknowledge authorship; neither could Russian criticism until recently." (p. xviii). It reminds me of the poem, "the boys i mean are not refined," by e. e. cummings, which was only included in a limited edition of nine copies of his book, NO THANKS, in 1935, but was dropped in subsequent editions until after his death in 1962. Similarly, the introduction by A. D. P. Briggs notices Pushkin's use of "swearwords in `The Waggon of Life'," (p. xix) which Briggs called, "language unusable until recent times in both Russia and England." (p. xvii). Anything that I might say about such language might be considered totally off the subject here, but a revisionist view of the relationship between poetry and philosophy might make some personal comments appropriate here.
As author of the unpublished, unedited, and largely unwritten MY VIETNAM WAR JOKE BOOK, any claim that I might make to knowledge of philosophy is highly suspect, similarly to the status achieved by Martin Heidegger when he is considered the Nazi philosopher. In my case, the must dubious aspect of convergence might be expressed by using the phrase *peace with honor* instead of any swearword that might appear. This could be catastrophic for the poetic values involved, but purely for philosophical reasons, I would like to insert *peace with honor* in place of the swearwords in Pushkin's poem, "The Waggon of Life." The second and third stanza become:
We climb aboard the boards at dawn
Full of wild devilment and crowing;
Spurning the lanquid life with scorn,
We cry, `Go on, get *peace with honor* going!'
But by midday we've lost that boldness,
Feeling the wagon shake and judder.
Dread are the heights and dizzy gorges,
We cry, `Slow down you silly *peace with honor*!'
A few things about this book seemed British to me. The word which made the least sense to me was "judder," in the poem "The Waggon of Life," on page 39. If the word was made up to produce a rhyme, the line it was in would have made more sense if it had ended with the common word, shudder:
Feeling the waggon shake and shudder.
The stanza doesn't end with: "We cry, `Slow down you silly buggy!"

This deserves the highest rating. An echo ef eternity itself. A beatuful piece of lyrics. I recomend it to anyone with a passion for poetry. This is a classic!
