He was buried in the reserve, and, for the longest time, his grave was "lost" and almost entirely swallowed by the wilderness.Many other luminaries and African characters have made the Selous their destination. Thich Nhat Hanh's writing is deceptive in its subtlety. He'll go on and on with stories about tree-hugging or metaphors involving raw potatoes; he'll tell you how to eat mindfully, even how to breathe and walk; he'll suggest looking closely at a flower and to see the sun as your heart. As the Zen teacher Richard Baker commented, however, Nhat Hanh is "a cross between a cloud, a snail, and piece of heavy machinery." Sooner or later, it begins to sink in that Nhat Hanh is conveying a depth of psychology and a world outlook that require nothing less than a complete paradigm shift. Through his cute stories and compassionate admonitions, he gradually builds up to his philosophy of interbeing, the notion that none of us is separately, but rather that we inter-are. In a series of vignettes and short passages, e.g., "Cooking Our Potatoes," Nhat Hanh outlines techniques for living mindfullly, that is, in the present. Peace Now is NOT Merely a Slogan

Hanh's book is a wonderful exhortation for all of us to find deep sprirituality in the midst of what we are NOW, what we do NOW, and simply the moment we call NOW. I greatly admire this Buddhist author's humility. He does not say "follow in my footsteps," but rather invites us to walk alongside him, and discover our own paths to "mindfulness." This is a very welcome change of pace from all the "spiritual" books that attempt to sell the author's own beliefs about God, or worse yet, attempt to promote the financial well-being of the author. Hanh has the resume to prove his sincerity -- having taken great risks to urge reconciliation at a time when the U.S. and Vietnam were torn by violent conflict. He adheres to the Zen tradition of making no demands on what people choose to believe, or what religion they should practice. "Peace Is Every Step" is a well expressed invitation to join him in this sincere spiritual quest.
A word of caution though -- you are not likely to benefit from the book unless you actually *practice* the techniques Hanh so eloquently describes. However, if you do, you will find peace, because it is already there inside of you. (And his other books are very much worth reading too!)

Great Book But Is It For You?

I want to start off by saying that the principles in this book are excellent for everyday life and practicing them would serve a person well. It is written well and organized neatly. It's not a big book but certainly not meant to be digested in one sitting or you lose the idea of it which is to slowly assimilate the ideas over time and reinforce them daily. Mindfulness was introduced to me through research on stress and anxiety. The premise of which is to stay focused on the present moment. It sounds simple but if you read more you will understand the depth of the meaning. Thich Nhat Hanh brings the concept to life by highlighting the many opportunities we have to practice mindfulness which is very much like meditation. In fact no real distinction is made in this book except to elaborate on the practice of mindfulness as an everyday means to staying "presence-minded" .He delivers the definition very well in the beginning and quickly moves on to the actual practice of mindfulness. His personal stories are both enlightening and lightheartedly funny. He uses the opportunities presented in everyday life to present mindfulness to those of us...most of us...who can't slow the brain and thought processes. When I say everyday opportunities I literally mean things like washing dishes where we are unaware of our racing brains fixed upon the past, future or even present concerns. He explains where to find enjoyment in those little mundane things without a heavy philosophy that is hard to digest. His ideas are useful and easy and focus heavily on the "how to" of mindfulness. He uses chants in some cases to bring you along the path and although our western culture may find it a little silly there is definitely a point and purpose here. I myself found them a little kooky but you extract the parts that work for you.

Although this is a very good book and good philosophy this book is not for everyone. This why I rated it 4 stars. If anything it serves as a warning that the book leads you to the water but you must drink it and although these things may seem self-evident I feel they aren't for everyone. For this book to serve you well you must make this a part of your life and integrate and assimilate the ideas. All of this presumes you can or want to follow this philosophy as a part of your everyday life. It's not easy to change your way of thinking and/or lifestyle. It's subjective to the reader and therefore not a perfect solution for everybody. There are cases where medicine may be more viable before attempting to assimilate these ideas as it relates to stress and anxiety. There are deficits of attention. There are mental disorders that may need to be addressed chemically before a person can relate and find useful these ideas. It's a very good book but also one of many possible solutions in solving our cluttered brains. I guess I'm saying you should know in advance that forces not under your immediate control may influence the outcome of reading this book.

This book was written by a Vietnamese Zen Buddhist monk. But don't let that fool you, this book is for everyone. The author doesn't try to convert you to his religion, the only Buddhist principles in this book go hand in hand with many Christian beliefs. The author shows how easy it is to live a fulfilling life in harmony with yourself and the world around you.
Read this book if you ever feel depressed or if you feel you are getting lost in the modern age. This book will not tell you who you are, but it will help to show you how you can discover what it is you really want and find happiness.
Thich Nan Haht was even nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize by none other than Martin Luther King Jr.
Highly recommended.

1. How much of the Sex, Life, & Hannah chick lit series is based on your personal experiences?

DS: Admittedly, to write the first draft of Sex, Life, & Hannah I took something like 38 journal entries and edited them, which mostly consisted of changing names that would be incriminating. This was 2003. Long before I had a true vision for the story or the idea to make it into a four-volume chick lit series. Luckily, I found a great editor that helped me figure out a plan, and since then the characters and storylines have taken on a life of their own and have very little to do with their journal entry roots.

2. Was there a particular book or author that inspired you to write this book series?

DS: I watched a couple of seasons of Sex and The City and then I read the book, and was blown away at how candidly the women were talking about sex. They weren't just sex objects, or experiencing sex in some naïve way. They were going through real emotions and discussing sex and relationships on a both a physical and philosophical level. That's how me and my friends discussed sex and relationships. That's how I wanted to write

3. Hannah's life involves a cast of very colorful characters, and you delve almost as deeply into their lives as you do into Hannah's, what compelled you to write the series as more of an ensemble piece?

DS: The friendships in the books are as important as the friendships we have in our twenties when we're still single and relying on those two, three, four closest people to be our support group every step of the way. Hannah's journey to finding "The One" and figuring out who she is, is not just going on in her head, it's being experienced by her friends and her friends' experiences are also shaping her journey. Besides, those characters bring a little comedic relief. Chick lit is supposed to have those romantic comedy elements.

4. Some reviewers have said that the way you write these books is almost T.M.I. Are you trying to shock readers, or is there a different reason for some of the explicit content?

DS: The pacing of these books is fast, similar to a soap opera, so I have to think up a lot of twists and turns for each character. That's part of the fun for me, but it also means that the storylines can get pretty scandalous. I'm sure it's a little T.M.I. for some, but it all serves a purpose, it's not just there for shock value.

5. You've said that the fourth book, the Autumn Season will be the last book in the Sex, Life, & Hannah series. Hannah has had a very turbulent love life. Have you already decided who Hannah will end up with?

DS: I've outlined a lot of storylines for the fourth and final book in the Sex, Life, & Hannah series, but honestly, I've had a hard time deciding who Hannah will end up with. I've actually thought about endings with all her major love interests: The Ex, Mr. Smyth, Phillip Ferrari, and Christian Knight. I've even thought about ending the series with Hannah finally single, and off on a brand new adventure in a new city. All of these endings appeal to me, but I may have to toss a coin--or two.

Dorota Skrzypek was born in Poland, grew-up in Canada, and moved to Southern California in 1997. After many years of flying airplanes, designing airports, and exploring the world, she decided to focus on writing fiction.

Sex, Life, & Hannah is Dorota's juicy woman-on-top book series chronicling the exploits of Hannah, a female professional trying desperately to make sense of the L.A. single life. Just when you think Sex, Life & Hannah can't get better, it does. This is the BEST one yet and definitely a page turner--OK, I'll admit I was up all night reading this one, too. When is #4 coming? I need to know what's going to happen. If you haven't read #1 and #2, you really need to to keep up with who's who and the history of the characters--the cool thing is Dorota does rehash the old stuff so you don't have to go back and re-read just to remember the play-by-play of each character. Amazon doesn't have enough stars for this one...really!

..What kind of life this Author is living. Am I bad person if I want to sabotage Hannah's hopes at happiness and stability so I can continue feeling superior? The dialogue and one liners from the character Jack are my favourite part. Seriously
truthful blunt and grounding even when it's hard to hear.
The set made great christmas presents to 17yr old girl who loves it now and to a 45 year old who "remembers when".

Art of the Northern Renaissance in historical context

Informative, smart and well-written, Craig Harbison's "The Mirror of the Artist" provides an excellent, brief introduction to the sensibility, historical context, and practice of art in the North. From the attitude toward realism, to patronage among the growing class of government bureaucrats, to the market for art or the influence of the Reformation, the book offers an enhanced understanding of artistic interest and social situations in which the paintings were made -- without ever forgetting their aesthetic dimension. The best tribute I can offer is that I immediately went back to Amazon to order Harbison's "Jan Van Eyck: The Play of Realism", a $35 large format paperback. Minor quibble: Although well-illustrated for a paperback this size, with the book just about 6.25" x 9.5", more details should have been illustrated when details were discussed in larger works. (I'm still looking for the barely visible figure of the devil above the cow in the "Portinari Altarpiece".) But this is a rare problem.

An exciting survey

I've loved the art of this period for years, but had little academic grounding in it. This book lets me return to old favorites with new eyes.
This, in common with other volumes in the "Perspectives" series, offers high quality (though small) reproductions of important works, up-to-date analysis and discussion of the art and the contexts in which it was created. Harbison's tone is informative, if ocasionally a little too sententious. But it's a very small price to pay, given the overall excellence of his work in this volume. It's obvious that Harbison loves this period, and he transmits his excitement for these works to the reader in concise language that is accessible to a lay audience.
Of particular interest is the discussion of how the Northern Rennaisance related to and differed from what was going on in Italy at the time. The only major weakness: not enough of a focus on Durer. But it's hard to get sufficient focus on any artist in a book this condensed.
An excellent book for those familiar with the period, or those wanting to get acquainted with a school of art often unjustly overshadowed by its southern contemporary.

AUTHOR NEEDS BASIC MATH LESSONS.

The writer claims that she is professor of Math, but a quick review of the book reveals author needs basic Math lessons. For example, Question #292, shortest side of an isosceles triangle is 10 m, and the longest side is 20 m. Madam, how is that possible?. Do you know that sum of two sides of a triangle has to be greater than the third?
Also, same mistake is repeated in Question #300: The sides of a triangle have lengths of 3, 3 and 12 meters. Again, YOU CANNOT FORM A TRIANGLE WITH SIDES 3, 3 and 12. This is very basic math that sum of two sides of a triangle have to be greater than the third. FAIL GRADE FOR YOU PROFESSOR.

I am a math tutor, and this book is great for tutors because it is simply a list of problems, with brief answers at the back. It has a great organization, so you can point your student to the correct section and have a many problems for them to do. Even better would have been if this book had a diagnostic test which gave the students' feedback aligned with the way they have subdivided the topic and a brief paragraph (or two) describing the skills each chapter teaches (e.g., What does the chapter "Numbers" cover? What about the chapter "Proportions"? etc.)

I also note that there is no trigonometry chapter and, as is usual for books of this type, there is no index.

It's nice!

This is a good review. It's different from other ACT practice test books. You can find out what kind of problem you have in different topics. And they also provide some fresh questions you will not see in the other practice test book.
