Charlotte N. Markey, Ph.D., is professor of psychology and chair of the psychology department at Rutgers University (Camden). LOVED IT! Very practical advice that I can put to work right away!

I LOVED this book. It had a lot of useful and practical advice. It was a refreshing change from the usual "Diet" book and a great way to start off the new year after indulging way too much after the holidays. I liked that it had personal anecdotes about the author and her journey and that the info in the book is based on health research. I trust Dr. Markey's knowledge on this topic given that she is a health researcher and professor at Rutgers.
The book itself is a realistic take on health and weight management that advocates for small lifestyle changes that you can adopt for life. It doesn't suggest that you starve or cut out all the food you love. In fact, it suggests that indulging now and then is a good way to stay on track. I plan to download the companion app "SmartenFit" so that I can monitor my exercise and what I eat better and get suggestions from their healthy options database. I always feel like I run out of healthy ideas and end up eating whatever is in the pantry. The biggest message that I got from the book was that it is important to be aware of our numbers (weight, BMI, etc.) and monitor our food and exercise habits, but not to the point of becoming obsessed because that can backfire in a big way. I have never been the type who was able to count every single calorie that I eat in a day or wear a pedometer to count my steps. But I can definitely benefit from monitoring what I eat in a general way and tracking how much exercise I am getting on a weekly basis. Hopefully the app will pick up where the book left off and allow me to do that.

Smart People Don't Diet provides an entertaining and informative overview of the science of eating and health. If you want to know why fad diets fail, how food affects mood and memory, what to emphasize in promoting healthy eating in children, and much, much more about eating and health, this is the book for you.

Most importantly, the book provides a road map for healthy eating. It turns out that it's not as difficult as I thought to eat well; through monitoring what one eats, and occasional substitution of healthy foods for ones high in calories, it's possible to enjoy eating and at the same time reach one's ideal weight. I look forward to finding out if this works for me!

A Dose of Sanity in a World Full of Crazy

On this day of resolutions, I thought I'd recommend a book to anyone who wants positive feedback on how to have a healthy relationship with weight management. I think it's hard to live in America and not face this at one point or another. I've struggled with it my whole life and am finally in a pretty good place. Smart People Don't Diet is just the affirmation I needed to feel like I'm finally on the right track. It's refreshing to have an approach that isn't a countdown to thin (30 days to fit, 20 lbs in 30 days etc.) but rather a sane and healthy way to think about one's health and body image. Thank you!

THE EPILOGUE HAS BEEN OMITTED!!!!

Let me be crystal clear and extremely frank in this review. The Autobiography of Malcolm X is my FAVORITE book and, I believe, one of the most important books written in the 20th Century. There have been many printings of this book and they have had slight alterations throughout their publishing. The original 1965 edition came with photos. There have always been three missing chapters that are still held by a private owner. However, Penguin Modern Classics has reprinted this essential piece of literature anew-WITHOUT THE ORIGINAL EPILOGUE or Ossie Davis' contributions to the work. This means, essentially, THAT THE ASSASSINATION HAS BEEN REMOVED FROM THE BOOK! Reading this version of the book will leave the reader wondering how Malcolm was assassinated, who was responsible and so forth. In addition, the first page of the book is a generalizing synopsis that has the audacity to claim that Malcolm advocated change through the vehicle of violence. Anyone who has read the complete Malcolm X Autobiography in depth knows fully well that this is untrue, an absolute falsity and misrepresentation that can lead to dangerous miscalculations. Omitting the Epilogue, for a topic this serious, is not only censorship, but one must conclude that it was done intentionally. If it was done intentionally, the only real motive could be to mislead a new generation of people trying to learn THE TRUTH about Malcolm. It's a shame that they won't be able to find all of it in his own book!

A remarkable man!

A victim of a Racist regime!
Starting the book I couldn’t stop reading, for five consecutive days, the first two chapters tell the story of his family and his childhood,heartbreaking events that are full of suffering, pain and humiliation this human race have suffered!
Chapter 3 becomes more detailed with a very few boring pages, chapter four becomes more interesting with his life at 16 in the ghetto, becoming a dancer and later a Harlemite. Chapter five have pages with his daily routines, way of living, gambling, pimping, gangster life, etc.” black victims of the white man`s American social system”, indeed at those times a black man’s life was a day at a time survival and the USA was a place where the criminal, the law and the politician inseparable!.
A vivid image is delivered in the later chapters of the decayed way of life of the white man elite in New York in the 1940s. We later see his introduction to Islam, a wrong version of it, a very wrong one, more of a mythical movement than a religion
We see how his deep interest in Islam and the desire to start writing about it drove him to read and educate himself, this changed his life from a life of crime to a life of 15 hours of self-learning a day.
There are so many lessons to be learned from this remarkable man! He is to be respected for his honesty and courage in relating all these events and the way he upheld to his convictions. I will not say more about the contents of this, I loved it and I have compassion with the cause of African Americans, nothing that can be done is enough to compensate the hundreds of years of injustice that they have been subjected to!

Knocked me out. Hard to express the power and depth of this autobiography. I am a white, 44 year old male from a rural New England background. I've always been interested in the history of black America, from slavery to the twenty-first century, and this book is a riveting account to end the twenthtieth century, giving us all something to dwell upon as we face the future.

Malcolm's story is passionate, raw and fascinating, from his violent and unstable upbringing through his years as a Harlem hustler through prison to his final dramatice end. He keeps the beat. Sometimes he brags, other times he is sensitive but through it all he tells the story of himself and the hypocrisy he faced as a black man in America. It is amazing to read of the culture of race relations in America in the 1930s and '40s. I had always assumed that racial relations (sexually speaking) were nearly non-existent among black and whites at this time, but I was wrong. According to Malcolm, blacks and whites in NYC were mixing it up for decades. This is the essense of what can be learned from this autobiography: Things are not what they seemed; blacks and whites were joined together in mysterious ways; people bent the rules to satisfy their curiosity while keeping a "white than thou" image for their neighbors. Malcolm witnessed it all and wrote it down so we - every American - could learn from it.

MLK notwithstanding, this book is a must-read for all Americans to understand the human struggle, a struggle that transcends and defines race. I dare you not to be changed by this book

About the Author
Andrew J. Hoffman is a Professor of English at San Diego Mesa College, where he teaches courses in grammar, composition, and British Literature. He received his B.A. in English from the University of California at Irvine and his M.A. from Syracuse University. He is the author of Monsters, part of the Bedford Spotlight series, and has contributed to The Arlington Reader, Fourth Edition. In addition, he has authored, edited, or otherwise contributed to numerous other textbooks of grammar, composition, and rhetoric, in both traditional and online formats.

For a GRRRRR Time.....

4 stars. I like this collection of essays a lot but I don't love it. I like what this little book tries to do. It attempts to engage college students who are required to complete transfer-level composition and/or literature with a cultural studies/pop culture approach on a single subject. I like that it's a viable alternative to the creative nonfiction canon--the nonfiction essays that we usually find in most comp readers (e.g., the Norton Reader, Writer's Presence, 50 Essays). After awhile even the classic essays become blah. That or I get bored easily (like most students). As amazing as they are, how many consecutive occasions can a person assign "Once More to the Lake" and "Death of the Moth"? (OK, don't answer that). This book is a courageous "out of the textbook canon box" alternative.

Who is this book appropriate for? It's at a ninth grade reading level. In my estimation, it's appropriate for first term first-year college students. This is the kind of text that helps students immerse themselves slowly into the tidal waters of academic conversations on pop culture / low art (let's admit it) subjects. I'm unsure I'd use this with more advanced lower division or upper division undergrad classes. It seems more appropriate for introductory level lower division courses in reading and writing.

It is superior to other books in the spotlight reader series. No offense to foodies, but I don't think I can teach "food matters" for a 16-weeks academic term. I'd bore myself silly. You may have a similar worry about this book. That is, can you really cover monsters for 12-13-14-15-16 weeks? After all, the price of the text ($30ish before bookstore markup) requires sustained time and effort to yield value. Also, students may not find it to be super valuable. In the end, I envision a lot of instructors making copies of certain articles from this collection for individual units but not really adopting it for the entire term. Why?

The book is compact and thin. It feels slight. At $30 it's a bit too thin. You can almost walk around with it in your back pocket. That has pros and cons. Yes, it's a convenient size that's not textbook clunky and overwhelming. But if it's something you can stuff into a back pocket, then perhaps it'll end up staying there for many students. The size is perfect for those who are transitioning from high school to college, perhaps best for pre-baccalaureate composition students (one level under transfer-level comp--but not appropriate for lower levels).

The readings are brief--about 3-4 pages in length. The readings scaffold from less complicated to more sophisticated at the end. Students love to read writers they're familiar with, such as Stephen King, Chuck Klosterman (Spin magazine), and Guillermo del Toro (Hellboy, Pan's Labyrinth). They love the King essay about horror movies (needs a longer except). I'd recommend more Stephen King material in the book--maybe one of his short stories or excerpts from his writing book ("On Reading" & "What Writing Is"). Students cannot get enough of Stephen King! And given that most of my students loathe reading and writing (gotta love Common Core)--well, Stephen King ain't such a bad idea, folks--could be much worse. At least King cares about literacy and writing.

Section 2 is nearly lost on my students. The excerpts from Borges and Ovid are too brief. This is where I'd cut to a book length work, such as a monster novel or text (Frankenstein, Dracula, Beowulf, Jeckyl, Heart of Darkness, etc) or Asma's excellent book on monsters. Section 3 has more hits than misses. The Beowulf excerpt is too brief. Students find the Poole essay dull. I can make the same comment about Sections 4 and 5. My students weren't thrilled about gender issues or "romancing the vampire." In Section 5, most of my students haven't seen the movie 'Halloween' so I had to skip the film essay. My students could hardly remember who Jeffrey Dahmer was--so the essays on modern-day "murdering minds" are somewhat interesting but don't really sustain much interest beyond 5 minutes of discussion. And most of the discussion involves remembering people, places, and events. "Do you remember when ....???"

The discussion questions and instructional apparatus are solid and are an excellent feature of this book. Great class discussion questions. Great writing topic questions that stimulate critical thinking and require students to make textual connections.

The book contains about 36 readings. Most of them are very brief. Some don't seem to be college level reading (OK, yeah, so not Foucault). Some are not terribly memorable. I think that about 25 out of 36 readings are assignable and engaging for most students. Not bad, but enough value for students? The literary excerpts are way too brief to yield much value. If I had to purchase this book for a class, then I might be inclined to sell it back to the bookstore at the end of the term. I don't really see this on many bookshelves. I might be interested in a monster theme in the short-term (over an academic term) but unsure of long-term value and interest.

Will a comp course on monsters be memorable for students?? Perhaps. Will you feel like Robin Williams's Mr. Keating in 'Dead Poets Society' if you adopt this book? Hard to say... perhaps you can fit in a touch of Whitman (all that barbaric yawping), Emerson, and the good ol' Bard.... Macbeth anyone? Iago? Gorgeous villains... lots of monsters in Shakespeare, Milton, and medieval lore (Beowulf, Sir Gawain??)

If your classroom is activity oriented, student-centered, and emphasizes more verbal than written response to readings, then this book may be a solid option for you. It does generate discussion. I found that I can talk about 1-2 articles per class session but students get bored returning to or revisiting articles (they believe) that they've already discussed. I didn't find that any particular reading can sustain a lot of critical effort and attention (perhaps a few late entries in Section 5) beyond 1-2 class sessions.

I must say it was fun having good reasons to teach Frankenstein, Dracula, and addressing "Mistah Kurtz" as a monster. Perhaps fun is reason enough to adopt this book.

I assume that if you've read this entire review, then you're likely a teacher. Entirely unrelated to the monster theme is an eye-opening book by David Denby (film critic for the New Yorker magazine) entitled 'Lit Up.' I highly, highly recommend it. Denby offers fairly objective reporting on how 10th and 11th graders approach classic literary texts (some surprises here). Check out what's possible. Most importantly, check out the value of teaching literature (literary fiction, drama, poetry) in English classes. I mention this because in CA our state curriculum for transfer-level college comp requires primarily nonfiction texts. Hear ye all English teachers, we need to teach classic literature too! Our students desperately need it... Perhaps this thematic reader is a good way to "sneak in" fiction (if you pair it with a book length fictional text).

And here's another text I enjoyed reading... Laura Bates, 'Shakespeare Saved My Life' ... on teaching Shakespeare in prison... (can be paired with Scott-Douglass, 'Shakespeare Inside.'

About the Author

Patricia Kelly Ralabate, Ed.D., joined CAST as Director of Implementation in September 2011 and currently teaches bilingual and special education policy courses for The George Washington University Graduate School of Education and Human Development. Previously, she served as a Boston College postdoctoral fellow-inresidence at CAST, working on universal design for learning leadership issues. As Senior Policy Analyst for special and gifted education for the National Education Association, she was Principal Editor of The Puzzle of Autism, an educator guide on autism spectrum disorder (ASD). About the Author

Jennifer Greene, has spent the past 15 years or so building software for many different kinds of companies. She's worked for small start-ups and some huge companies along the way. She's built software test teams and helped lots of companies diagnose and deal with habitual process problems so that they could build better software. Since her start in software test and process definition, she's branched out into development management and project management. She's currently managing a big development team for a global media company and she's managed just about every aspect of software development through her career.

Jennifer founded Stellman & Greene Consulting with Andrew Stellman in 2003, initially to serve the scientific and academic community. They have worked in a wide range of industries including finance, telecommunications, media, non-profit, entertainment, natural language processing, science and academia. Just passed PMP Exam

I'm a baby boomer who just passed the PMP exam on the first try. I couldn't see spending $2,500 for one of those boot camp courses, so I bought three books from Amazon, printed my copy of the PMBOK, and started my self-study program.

For exam prep purposes, Head First Pmp: A Brain-Friendly Guide to Passing the Project Management Professional Exam was by far the best. The approach is a little unusual, but the combination of pictures, humor and active exercises really works to help you learn the material. The practice exercises and the full 200 question test were challenging enough to make the real exam seem relatively easy. You can also take the practice test online if you want.

For the purpose of self-studying for the exam, I'd have to give this book top ratings. It definitely helped me.

I just passed the PMP exam -- 4th edition of the PMBOK based. The test does require quite a bit of preparation. I have many years of project management experience, so I have a strong practical background. The PMBOK covers a very large body of material which is summarized at a high level in the PMBOK. You must have a combination of practical experience and extensive book knowledge of the PMBOK to pass the exam.

I would start with this book before reading the PMBOK material. The approach in the book is very effective and gives you a very solid overview of the key PMBOK items. After studying this book and doing the practice test in the back, I would then suggest that you go over the PMBOK 4th edition several times followed by doing a lot of practice tests. Practice tests are critical so you can figure out how to properly interpret what the question is asking.

Appoach:

The book uses a series of techniques -- stories, use cases, crossword puzzles, flash card type quizzes (a range of memonic tricks). It may seem a bit odd but it does really work. The reason why I say start with this book is that you need to have solid overview of all the subject areas and processes before you try to connect lots of detailed information that makes up the PMBOK knowledge space.

There are many other books out there to study for the PMP exam. But, if the book does not take a top-down approach, you can very quickly get confused with the PMBOK terminology and processes.

There is a large amount of information available on the internet. When you are taking the practice tests, you should make a list of any terms you are not familiar with and then look them up later. This is a very helpful way to get a feel for the scope and level of detail that you need to know about items defined in the PMBOK and project management world.

First step to PMP Certification !!!

If you are planning on buying this book, you are probably aspiring/preparing for PMP. I did the same couple of months earlier and glad my plan and effort was helpful.

I was suggested this book by one of my friend. It provides the highlights and good overview of the PMP certification. You will have to go through this book once to get a fair idea about the topic. If you are planning to take up PMP and complete it seriously, you will have to spend atleast 3 - 4 months of rigorous effort. Be aware that your best chance of completing is the first try. Give your best and understand the concepts. If you dont get it right first time, put more time and effort.

1st step: Head First PMP - This is a easy book to study and helps grasps high level overview and concepts.
2nd step: Rita Mulcahy - Go through once. You have to complete the excercises and questions at end of each chapter to get familiarity with the kind of questions.
3rd step : PMBOK - Go through once concentrate on concepts, defenistions and terminologies.
4th step: You should now start going through sample questions through various websites. Make note of your weak areas.
5th step: Rita Mulcahy - Now concentrate more on topics which you are weak and glance through others.
6th step: PMBOK - Now concentrate more on topics which you are weak and glance through others.
7th step: Take PMStudy 4 sets of 200 questions each for 12 days and find out what kind of questions you need to concentrate.
