Five Mysteries for You to Solve
By Lonnie E. Holder
This collection of mysteries for young adults has existed since 1963 and has been through multiple editions. As far as I can tell, the most recent editions retain the text of the original. There are five mysteries. Each provides sufficient clues to let you have a reasonably good chance at guessing some or all of the solution for each mystery. However, the length of each mystery is such that it can be hard to find the clues.

The opening story is "The Mystery of the Five Sinister Thefts." Jerry Mason is helping his uncle Frank, owner of Clanton's Circus. Jerry is a helper at the circus, doing whatever odd job that needs to done. Jerry returned to the circus from mailing a letter for his uncle Frank to find that something at the circus had changed. He quickly learns that someone has taken one of Madame Winifred's snakes. This theft followed several other thefts, each of items of varying value but none seemingly worth a thief's time.

Jerry tries to figure out why someone would steal the various items, using everything he has seen and heard around the circus. After thinking about the things he knows, Jerry suddenly realizes that he knows exactly who took the various items and why. Can you figure out who took each of the five items and why? Can you figure out where the snake is?

The next story is "The Mystery of the Seven Wrong Clocks." Someone murdered Fritz Sandoz and robbed his store some time before Peter Perkins arrived at the store of his friend. Sandoz was able to modify a number of clocks to provide a clue regarding his murderer. Can you solve the mystery of the wrong clocks before Peter Perkins does?

The third story is "The Mystery of the Three Blind Mice." Nigel Mayfair is a wheelchair bound millionaire. Someone is stealing some of Mayfair's most valuable stamps and Mayfair has asked detective Porterfield Adams to investigate the thefts and hopefully regain the valuable stamps. Porterfield brought son Andy, a stamp collector, as a consultant.

No one, staff or family, likes Mayfair. It would be fair to say that Mayfair has no friends either. There is little surprise and even less grieving when someone shoots Mayfair while Mayfair is sitting in his bed, leaving a mysterious, incomplete sentence as his final words. The large number of people in the house at the time and in the house directly across from Mayfair's house, which is a small castle, makes this mystery a challenge.

I thought this mystery was particularly difficult to solve because the most important clues are subtle. It helps if you read the story twice before reading the conclusion.

In "The Mystery of the Man Who Evaporated," mystery writer Harley Newcomb has apparently disappeared from a locked house. The windows are boarded over and the door is nailed shut as well. The only clue is a mysterious note and footsteps that get smaller and smaller. English teacher and mystery writer Howard Matthews and one of his students, Jeff Landrum, try to figure out what the police could not, the location of Harley Newcomb. Can an English teacher and a student figure out how Harley Newcomb "disappeared" from a house without an exit? Can the pair solve the mystery when the police could not? Perhaps you can solve the mystery before Mr. Matthew and Jeff.

The final mystery is "The Mystery of the Four Quarters." Nick and Bettye Layton find themselves kidnapped by mysterious men. The pair soon discovers that the men are spies looking for information from their father. They also think the spies are crazy because their father is not involved in any kind of military factory or research, but the men have kidnapped the brother and sister, so they know what they want.

Their kidnappers ask Nick and Bettye to tell their father to provide certain information in order to secure their return. Nick and Bettye write notes to their father, carefully reviewed by the head kidnapper. Will Nick and Bettye be able to escape their kidnappers before their father gives it to the kidnappers? There is so much tension!

A number of books that contain short mysteries with sufficient clues to solve the mysteries are available. Of course, this one is from Alfred Hitchcock. My experience has been that a book with Hitchcock's name on it is generally good, and this collection of mysteries is good. I did think that a couple of the mysteries were very difficult to solve. A couple I got reasonably quickly. These stories are good mental exercise and our brains always need a workout. If you enjoy mysteries and you like to be able to try to solve them yourself, this book could be for you.

Enjoy!

A trip down memory lane - a great trip!
By Dom Miliano
Growing up, this was one of my all time favorite books. First, its stories are very well written. They are "solve them yourself" and the cues and clues are both subtle and challenging. By the time I finished reading, I was both a better, more careful reader and a sharper problem solver. Quite an accomplishment for one book.

The seller delivered the book in great shape and it was exactly as advertised. It arrived quickly and it appeared to be "as new" or as new as a nearly 50 year old book could be. I am very pleased and recommend the seller.

This is a time machine for me - taking me back to the best days of my youth - ones with a good book in my hand!

You will enjoy reading this one - if you can find a copy...

"His heart was pounding and he seemed unable to get his breath. He couldn't breathe. He was suffocating already!"
By Mark Louis Baumgart
Alfred Hitchcock (1899-1980) became involved in the movies in the late nineteen teens, became a director in 1922 (the uncompleted "Number 13"), published the first (of many) of his anthologies in 1945 ("Suspense Stories"), and published his first juvenile, "Alfred Hitchcock's Solve-Them-Yourself Mysteries", written by Robert Arthur, Jr., in 1963, in January, eleven months before John F. Kennedy was assassinated. In 1963 Hitchcock released "The Birds", and one year later "Alfred Hitchcock And The Three Investigators" (43 books 1964-1987 in American, 150 so far in Germany) started publishing. It was also the eighth year of ten, (1955-1965) for his television series, and in America it was the thirteenth year of America's involvement in Vietnam.

This book was originally published without a dust jacket with the artwork printed directly onto the hard cover, and it contained five novelettes written by Robert Arthur, Jr., and ten full-page, and one double page illustration by one-time Paddington Bear illustrator Fred Banbery (1913-1999). The stories are not your choose-your-own-adventure types, nor are they the Encyclopedia Brown types. They are full-length stories in which the ending is cut off, only to be continued on the next page after giving the reader a chance to solve the story's puzzle.

The first story is the circus story 'The Mystery Of The Five Sinister Thefts' and Jerry Mason is on his way to the small one-ring Clanton's Circus, which has just been bought by Frank Mason who is Jerry's uncle. As he arrives he realizes that the circus is too quiet, and finds that there has been a fifth theft. While each item stolen is of little monetary value, they are of high intrinsic value, with each theft happening over five consecutive nights. This time Winifred the Snake Charmers prize snake has been lifted.

It's clear that these thefts are related to the theft of "The Green Flame" diamond that had been previously stolen from the Museum Of Fine Arts in Millerton, a town the circus had toured through. The story is interesting, and it features a classic MacGuffin, a standard plot device in Hitchcock's movies. I guessed the answer this time around, but you also learn a little about the lost culture of the small circuses. Four stars.

The next story is 'The Mystery Of The Seven Wrong Clocks' and features (continuing character?) Peter Perkins, a professional puzzle and cryptogram writer who teems up head cop Detective Magrue's son to find the killer of Perkins' friend. The problem is based on how a series of seven clocks have been set up by his friend before his murder. I didn't quite get the set up for the solution, but the solution itself is based on the Sherlock Holmes story 'The Case Of The Dancing Men'. Margrue is an obnoxious idiot, and the set-up seems contrived, but in the end, Arthur played fair with the clues, so I can't complain. Four stars.

When is a killer not a killer? The answer is in the next story 'The Mystery Of The Three Blind Mice'. Porterfield Adams is a detective specializing in forgery and embezzlement and he has been employed by the blustering and cartoonish Nigel Mayfair, a rich, obsessive, hateful, and controlling man who lives in the imported Castle Cragie, and who has found that somebody has stolen some of his more valuable stamps. Along for the ride is Porterfield's son Andy, who is an expert in stamps. Sometime during the night, Mayfair, who lives in a house of people who hate him, is impossibly shot while in bed. This story comes very close to being a lock-room murder mystery, along with being a theft story. I actually remember reading this story forty years ago as a lad, and it holds up very well as it actually involves several puzzles and mysteries. I don't believe that you can shoot three bullets through a pane of glass without shattering it (see customer images), but that's the only flaw. This story is very much like Hitchcock's more mystery oriented television episodes. The Hardy Boys have turned stories like this into whole novels. As an ex-stamp collector, I give this story five stars.

The fourth story is 'The Mystery Of The Man Who Evaporated' and it deals with Jeff Landrum, who likes mysteries so much that he eventually becomes involved in a real life one. It all starts innocently enough. Jeff finds out that his English instructor Howard Matthews is writer of mystery short fiction. Then Matthews asks Jeff if he would like to go to a Mystery Writers Of America meeting and meet some mystery writers. Here Arthur does some name dropping as we meet Earle Stanley Gardner, Ellery Queen (both of them), Walter Gibson, and another neighbor of Jeff's, locked-room mystery author Harley Newcomb, who seems to be a thinly disguised John Dickson Carr. Newcomb is a compulsive writer who is enthusiastically working on what he considers one of his best novels. Excited about his novel, he leaves the meeting early, and then. . .just disappears. When Jeff and Matthews go to visit Newcomb they find that his rented house is in the same condition as the one that he had described in his new novel. It is locked and nailed up from the inside. Because the local yokels are as thick as fenceposts, Jeff and Matthews have to investigate the disappearance on their own, only to get into trouble by being too nosey. There is a hint of science fiction in this story that goes by the wayside at the story's end. While the story is a genuine locked room puzzle, it has a very disappointing, contrived, and ridiculous denouement. This is NOT a fair-play story, and there is no way you can solve the puzzle. Two stars. Nice set-up, but that's about it.

The last story 'The Mystery Of The Four Quarters' finds twins Bettye and Nick Layton in deep trouble as they are kidnapped from the Blackwell Mansion by the fat Mr. Nemo and his oversize thug Fritz, because Nemo wants a new invention of their father's. This is a suspense story that concentrates more on the puzzle; how do the children contact their father, tell him where they are, and do so without their captors catching on to their scheme, than the story's probability of possibility. Again, here is a story that I don't think that there are many who could solve the oblique and contrived puzzle. It's entertaining and all, but the puzzle depends on knowing too much information that is barely touched on, and a puzzle that is almost impossible to decipher. Two stars.

Robert Arthur (1909-1969) had a long career with Hitchcock, ghost editing nine of his anthologies, writing for his television show, his magazine, and creating the Three Investigators. He had also had a long career in writing for the pulps, he was one of Isaac Asimov's favorite authors, for radio, he co-created "The Mysterious Traveler" (1943-1952), and here he kick-started Hitchcock's entry into the juvenile mystery market. Each of the stories here features a teenage investigator, at least one illustration, and, like Hitchcock's tv show, is interrupted intermediately by comments from Hitchcock. Most of comments can be skipped if you want, but they are essential in 'Mystery/Four Quarters' to understand the puzzle.

However, 'Five Sinister Thefts', 'Seven Wrong Clocks' and 'Three Blind Mice' are all stories that make this a four star read, even if 'Man/Evaporated' and 'Four Quarters' bring the collection down a star. I got this book from my library after it was culled from its shelves this year, altogether, it has been there (since 1966), and checked out and read, for forty-four years!

For this site I have also reviewed the following juvenile mysteries:

bigfoot by Hal George Evarts
The Case of the Somerville Secret by Robert Newman
Mystery Of Mordach Castle by William MacKellar
The Road Of The Dead (Push Fiction) by Kevin Brooks
Skull Island (Usborne Adventure) by Lesley Sims
A Ufo Has Landed by Milton Dank & Gloria Dank

EXCELLENT OVERVIEW WITH SUPERB SAMPLES
By gracies mom
I do not know what kind of background the previous reviewer has but as artist and art teacher I highly recommend this book. The idea of valuing it according to price, like some kind of bean counter is absurd.
The book covers the fundamentals and the drawings are superb. It is easy to carry and also serves as a continuous source of style and inspiration.
As for the price it is worth every penny. If you want beautiful though realistic images to act as an ideal and have enough intelligence not to need Parental consent to see the nudes in the book please DISREGARD THE FATUOUS AND INCREDULOUS REVIEW ABOVE.
The book dose exactly what it claims and dose so with great art, style and composition. Craig Nelson is one of the most accomplished draftsman of this era and has made, and shows great choices.
Need to be taken by the hand through everything pertaining to drawing then head for your nearest art school, as no book can do what a serious series of classes in drawing fundamentals can do. However don't trash a perfectly fine and inspirational book for the price or the heck of it.
And, yes I do own the book and am very pleased with it. So are my many students.

art student drawing reference
By Lloyd L. Lehn
I almost finished with this book and have concluded it is well worth the money.

It has a lot of information useful to the drawing student that I have not found elsewhere and I have a lot of drawing/art books.

Subjects are a quick and dirty summary except fot the demonstrations which cover maybe three pages and take you step by step through the process of makeing the drawing.

Begining Artist must read
By Clifford Lehmann
I have just finished reading this book. I am an artist and I plan to give this book to young relative of mine for Christmas. It covers every aspect of drawing in an easy to understand way. I also like how the author combines other mediums with and in his drawings. The challenge to use several mediums in a single project is great. I will refer to this book many times when I work on my projects as well.
I would recommend this book to anyone, young or old, beginner or advanced who wishes to create a piece of art they can be proud to display.

Good book on assessing young children
By Nikita Benedict
This book has some very good information about how to assess young children and also about the various types of assessments and their components. If you are looking for a book that helps you understand assessments and how they work this is a good book to get. I do however wish that there were more actual assessment templates for the different kinds of assessments so that I could prind them off and use them for my observations.

Assembly Language Step-by-Step: Programming with Linux, by Jeff Duntemann

The eagerly anticipated new edition of the bestselling introduction to x86 assembly language

The long-awaited third edition of this bestselling introduction to assembly language has been completely rewritten to focus on 32-bit protected-mode Linux and the free NASM assembler. Assembly is the fundamental language bridging human ideas and the pure silicon hearts of computers, and popular author Jeff Dunteman retains his distinctive lighthearted style as he presents a step-by-step approach to this difficult technical discipline.

He starts at the very beginning, explaining the basic ideas of programmable computing, the binary and hexadecimal number systems, the Intel x86 computer architecture, and the process of software development under Linux. From that foundation he systematically treats the x86 instruction set, memory addressing, procedures, macros, and interface to the C-language code libraries upon which Linux itself is built.

  • Serves as an ideal introduction to x86 computing concepts, as demonstrated by the only language directly understood by the CPU itself
  • Uses an approachable, conversational style that assumes no prior experience in programming of any kind
  • Presents x86 architecture and assembly concepts through a cumulative tutorial approach that is ideal for self-paced instruction
  • Focuses entirely on free, open-source software, including Ubuntu Linux, the NASM assembler, the Kate editor, and the Gdb/Insight debugger
  • Includes an x86 instruction set reference for the most common machine instructions, specifically tailored for use by programming beginners
  • Woven into the presentation are plenty of assembly code examples, plus practical tips on software design, coding, testing, and debugging, all using free, open-source software that may be downloaded without charge from the Internet.

Learn assembly language, and you learn the machine

In this third edition of his bestselling guide to Intel x86 assembly language under Linux, Jeff Duntemann positions assembly not as unapproachable geek arcana but as a first programming language, suitable for readers who have no previous programming experience. As the fundamental language of the CPU, assembly lays the groundwork for all other programming languages, especially native-code C, C++, and Pascal. By mastering assembly, programmers will learn how x86 computers operate all the way down to "the bare silicon," at a level of detail that no other approach can equal.

Assembly Language Step by Step, Third Edition, helps you:

  • Review the fundamental concepts behind computing and programming, including the hexadecimal and binary number bases

  • Understand the evolution of the Intel CPUs and how modern x86 processors operate

  • Grasp the process of programming itself, from editing source code through assembly, linking, and debugging

  • Comprehend x86 32-bit protected-mode memory addressing

  • Learn the x86 instruction set by dissecting numerous complete example programs

  • Work with the wealth of free programming utilities under Ubuntu Linux, including the Kate editor, the NASM assembler, and the GNU toolset

  • Master practical details of Linux programming, including procedures, macros, the INT 80h call gate, and calls to the standard C libraries

About the Author
Jeff Duntemann has been writing about computing for over thirty years, and is the author of numerous books on programming, wireless networking, and system administration. He has been a columnist in Dr. Dobb's Journal, and has edited well-known programming publications like PC Techniques and Visual Developer. After hours, he enjoys blogging, astronomy, amateur radio, and writing science fiction.

Great Introductory Book on IA-32 Assembly!
By Robin Levin
This is a very good introductory book on IA-32 Assembly programming on Linux (well, Ubuntu distro specifically but adaptable to other distros too). Uses NASM and a stack of tools that are likely available for all distros (but again definitely if you have an Ubuntu variant).

If you're really ready to take your time and are shooting for a well-grounded point of departure than this book is for you. If you've already mastered things like IA-32 architecture, number theory, adding in hex, fundamentals of assembly, registers, eflags, etc., than this might move too slow for you. That being said, you may just find some interesting nuggets in this book.

One thing I really liked about this book is he moves at a very realistic gradient for the beginning assembly newbie and also provides a very nice setup for experimentation (that is, he suggests a certain toolset which, once setup, will allow you to step through your program and inspect the registers instruction by instruction). I found this quite helpful in making abstract concepts more concrete and to confirm my understanding. Also, very nice use of diagrams not usually found in a topic as terse as assembly language!

Some have complained on earlier editions that they don't like his writing style and that he takes too long to get you to the meat of assembly. I wasn't too crazy about the Martians FooBitidy whatever analogy that he uses, and he definitely can take a bit long to get to the point from time to time. However, this can come in useful for complicated sections as he really takes his time to lay it all out in such a way to where you'd have to be asleep not to "get it". As a programmer who has learned to do a lot of reading on the side, I don't much care if 100 pages could have been stripped down - I'm more concerned with whether I can actually learn from a book. If you require K&R style writing you my not like this. However, my suggestion - deal with a bit of annoying fluff and you'll be thankful in the end. I just don't see another resource that gets you this kind of grounding IMO.

You definitely should be ready to take your time with this one. For example, he will ask you to put down the book and learn to add up to 0Fh + 0Fx, and expects you to commit this to memory. I made flash cards and put the book down for a few days until I had that down pat (this only happens once in the book though) - so yes, there's some commitment involved on the reader's part. But it won't dump you on the side of the road half way in so you'll be happy you made the effort. Note that he many times will present a code example with a few new concepts and THEN explain those concepts shortly thereafter. He seems to like to show some things in context and this requires some forward references - nothing that leaves you too miffed though.

Overall, wish I had this book earlier in my career! Well down My Duntemann!

Fantastic introduction to assembly language
By Steve E. Chapel
The author is a very experienced assembly language programmer, and he covers topics in a very organized way so that the reader can fully understand at each step of the way. This is a bit boring for programmers who are familiar with assembly language, even those vastly different from Intel's, but those readers can skip the first three chapters and skim parts of the others.

The author does a fantastic job of focusing on the most important information needed for assembly language programming. He does not present a comprehensive explanation of every instruction, but instead explains each type of instruction and the most used instructions. He covers the use of tools including debuggers and make, and explains how to interface with C programs and how to make Linux kernel calls. After reading each chapter, I was able to use references available on the Internet to find any information that wasn't in the book, such as a comprehensive list of kernel calls and Intel assembly language instructions.

The instructions given in the book for setting up the tools are for Ubuntu, but yum works well on Fedora:
yum install unzip bless nasm make gcc kdbg insight kdesdk kdebase

One problem with the book is that it sticks to 32-bit assembly language and doesn't explain what differs on 64-bit systems. I found that I had to change nasm's output format from elf to elf64 (-f elf64) and use the 64-bit registers (rax, rbx, rbp, etc.) The book describes pushad and popad to push and pop all general purpose registers, but these do not work with the 64-bit registers. Indicating that a memory reference is 64 bits is done with qword. I couldn't output command line arguments as set up by the Linux runtime without copying them into a different buffer.

On 64-bit Linux, the glibc calling conventions are completely different than those described in the book. I was able to figure out how to call printf by writing a C program and disassembling it with objdump, which I found more readable then gcc's assembly listing. The glibc calling convention for 64-bit is that the arguments are passed in registers, with the first argument in rdi, second in rsi, third in rdx, and fourth in rcx; also the rax register must be set to zero for variable-argument functions. The registers rbx, rbp, rsp, r12, r13, 14, and 15 must be saved by the called function.

The fact that I was able to program on a 64-bit system even though the book doesn't cover 64-bit systems is a testament to how well the author covers the basics. Instead of trying to provide every little piece of information an assembly language programmer may need, he provides clear explanations of the basics so that the reader can understand enough to look up any additional information needed. I recommend this book over all others for programmers who want to learn Intel assembly language.

Where the Cool Kids Program
By Amazon Customer
A long time ago, in a basement far far away, I was sitting in front of a long-suffering television set, banging away on a Commodore 64, trying to dive beyond BASIC programming to where the cool kids played, down below the user interface, down in the guts of the machine itself. Stripped of the training wheels, you could write programs on that ancient machine that would fly. The cool kids wrote programs in assembly language. I tried. But I never got there. By the time I hit college, they didn't teach it anymore, and gradually, I moved past it to other programming, and ultimately to more satisfying careers doing other things.

But I never forgot.

Given that background, I didn't have high hopes for Assembly Language Step by Step. I know Jeff. I've read and enjoyed his science fiction, and he's blurbed mine, and to disclaim a moment, I know him well enough that he wouldn't let me pay for my copy of this new, near total rewrite of his classic text on the matter. I knew if anyone could explain assembly to me, it would be him, but I still expected to hit the point where my eyes glazed over and I didn't care anymore.

Instead, by five chapters into the book, I had refreshed my knowledge of binary and hexadecimal math. I'd looked into computer architecture to a depth I never reached before, and begun to understand, really understand the true center of assembly programming, the addressing of memory. And it's not like it was in the days when I tried to learn assembly before. Modern operating systems treat memory differently, and it's this new, more complex memory mapping that I understand now. Even after 30 years in and around the computing industry, this book taught me things I didn't know about what computing is, when all the familiar abstractions are stripped away and the bare code is exposed.

I can't wait to go further.

Thirty years later, that geeky kid in the basement who didn't get it, finally gets it.

If you want to get it, if you want to program where the cool kids program, if you want to understand how that machine on your desk really works, you want, you need, you must have this book. Buy this book. You won't regret it.

Highly recommended.
Five stars

Review
"Witter's art is delicate, with a baroque manga feel... Louis and Lestat's lovely faces come to life, collars are fluffed with detailed antique lace, and many bites are bitten. Most effectively drawn is young Claudia, flashing from innocent to monstrous by the panel."―io9.com

About the Author
One of America's most read and celebrated authors, Anne Rice is known for weaving together the visible and supernatural worlds in epic stories that both entertain and challenge readers. Anne's life experiences and intellectual inquisitiveness provide her with constant inspiration for her work. She has written over thirty novels and one autobiography. Her books are rich tapestries of history, belief, philosophy, religion, and compelling characters that examine and extend our physical world beyond the limits we perceive. She lives and works in California.

Ashley Marie Witter was born and raised in Madison, Wisconsin, and she went to the Madison Area Technical College, where she was a student of Mark A. Nelson (Aliens, Dark Horse Comics) and earned her associates degree in Animation and Conceptual Development. After experimenting a bit with web comics like Reign of Adeodatus and Scorch, she later contributed to a comics anthology called The Eternal Sad (Gothology). Building a name for herself in the Madison art scene through gallery shows and working on commissions to pay the bills, Ashley was just saying to herself, "I need a real job!" when she received an e-mail from Yen Press the following day.

Simply Gorgeous.
By V.T.
Ashley Marie Witter gives a stunningly beautiful monochromatic retelling of Anne Rice's classic "Interview with the Vampire" - and from Claudia's point of view. The parchment-toned sepia paper makes it feel almost like a lost tome, and the striking occasional use of color (notably, a rather vivid crimson) gives a bit of spice to it. I love her character design for Lestat, it's less as Rice envisioned in the 70's/'80s (Rutger Hauer) and more 90's movie-style (Tom Cruise)- but there's also the flare of the artist and her own interpretations and personal art influences. Louis is distinct, and the faces he makes - Witter gets a lot of emotion out of him, and that smug look Lestat gets - it's fangirl heaven. Claudia is as charming as she is in the book, if not more so - there's something of transcendence as the novel progresses, she goes from the dead-eyed dying child to growing fully into herself and then some. Oh and the costumes - amazing attention to detail. It's awesome to see an artist skip over screentone (especially if they're a manga-style artist) and just do everything with proper shading and intricate hand drawn details.

I highly recommend it to Rice fans who do enjoy comics (Anyone else remember the 'Vampire Lestat' comic from Daerick Gross & Faye Perozich?), but I also think it might serve as a good introduction to the series for friends or family who may be intrigued.

Brilliant in its darkness
By Mark Colan
A NEW ANNE RICE BOOK?

No, it's not. When I first heard about this book some time ago, I don't think it said it was a graphic novel, and I thought it was a new book by Anne Rice. Instead, a talented artist has adapted a part of Interview With The Vampire to graphic novel form. Some reviewers are put off by this. If you would like to review Claudia's story from her perspective, and enjoy looking at a lot of nicely penned drawings to illustrate it, with cartoon balloons for dialog, you might like it.

THE STORY

The story is something like the middle third of Interview With The Vampire, focusing on Claudia, a little girl who Lestat (an older vampire in a young man's form) turned into a vampire. It is a tragic story; a great deal of Claudia's problem is that her body remains in the form of a little girl, yet her mind grows up, and her plight makes her increasingly angry.

I suspect that if you have not read Interview with the Vampire but pick up this graphic novel, you will totally understand the story and find it complete, but will be left with a lot of questions. Reading the original novel will answer most of them and add a lot to the experience.

I don't have a copy of the original novel handy, so I don't know just how much of the dialog came from the original story. I suspect that a lot of the words in this graphic novel, possibly most or all of them, were written by the artist. In that sense only, you could say this is not an Anne Rice book. On the other hand, the story is true to the original book, with some enhancements for revealing Claudia's perspective (since the original was from Louis' perspective). The added ideas are in the spirit of the original.

THE ART

One reviewer said this was nothing more than a comic book; having read comic books produced from 1950's on, I really don't agree.

I have seen a few graphic novels, so I am aware of how they differ from comic books: they are generally written for an adult audience and have a deeper plot. Some have a lot of frames that have no dialogue, or (as in this one) an empty speech balloon with an elipses (...) in it. If a picture is worth a thousand words, then truly these stylistic features add tremendous expression to the story.

Books that Anne Rice write often feature characters who are young, beautiful, and rich. This book is no exception. Claudia, Louis, and Lestat are beautiful people, and the artist conveys this in each frame. They are also vampires and sometimes monsters, and this comes across very strongly. Some of the background characters are drawn as more ordinary people, perhaps to emphasize the beauty of the lead characters.

Rather than black and white, this book is done in sepia tones, perhaps to make it look old. I thought my copy was flawed, because I kept seeing these little water spots appearing in places that should be white or nearly so. But as I looked closely, I noticed that these spots were not flaws, but in fact part of the art: I could easily see the rosette patterns used in the printing process for mid-tones.

The near-total use of sepia tones servers very well to bring out the shock value of blood when it appears; it is the only time red is used, and while it is not extensive, it jumps out. Orange is used in the scene of a fire with the same results.

MY REACTION

Before ordering the book, I wasn't sure I would like it; in a way I did not want to. Curiosity got the better of me. Having read it now, I am astonished at what a beautiful creation and labor of love this book is. It is clear that the artist/author has a deep appreciation for the original book. I can't imagine how much thought, creativity, planning, and time must have gone into drawing all these beautiful pictures.

For me, overall it is a startling, unexpected, enormous success. I could imagine the demand this book creates starting an entire line of books covering all of The Vampire Chronicles and even The Witching Hour and its sequels. In fact, I'd like to see that happen; it would be a chance to revisit all of these books from a new perspective.

BOTTOM LINE

Amazon says five stars is "I love it". I don't give five stars often or easily, but this one was so unexpected and fun, and a wonderful tribute to the original story, that I must. Bravo, Ms. Witter!

Beautiful adaptation!
By MMaru
This is a really beautiful adaptation of Anne Rice's Interview with the Vampire, as told from the point-of-view of the immortal child, Claudia. The artwork is positively stunning - very beautifully drawn and colored, relying heavily on a sepia sort of tone that helps the vivid blood and fire really stand out. I'm very impressed by the art alone. The expressions and the sheer beauty of it would endear this book to me even if nothing else did.

I love that the storyline stays true to the novel, even taking exact lines and actions from it. I would have liked to see a little bit more that indicates that it's actually from Claudia's point of view - this doesn't really supply anything new and different than what we get in the original novel, which takes place in Louis's point of view. I rather expected to see some experiences that Claudia underwent on her own that went unbeknownst to Louis in the source material, but there were none. I'm also not sure that someone who has not read Interview with the Vampire would really be able to follow everything that's going on. Still, for a seasoned Anne Rice fan, this graphic novel is a fantastic addition to the bookshelf. I borrowed the copy I read, but I fully intend to add this to my personal library now.

The Artist's Mind: A Psychoanalytic Perspective on Creativity, Modern Art and Modern Artists, by George Hagman

For the past century psychoanalysts have attempted to understand the psychology of art, artists and aesthetic experience. This book examines how contemporary psychoanalytic theory provides insight into understanding the psychological sources of creativity, Modern Art and modern artists.

The Artist’s Mind revisits the lives of eight modern artists including Henri Matisse, Marcel Duchamp, Jackson Pollock and Andy Warhol, from a psychoanalytical viewpoint. It looks at how opportunities for a new approach to art at the turn of the twentieth century offered artists a chance to explore different forms of creativity and artistic ambition. Key areas of discussion include:

  • developmental sources of the aesthetic sense
  • psychological functions of creativity and art
  • psychology of beauty, ugliness and the Sublime.
  • co-evolution of the modern self, modernism and art.
  • cultural context of creativity, artistic identify and aesthetic experience.

Through the examination of great artists’ lives and psychological dynamics, the author articulates a new psychoanalytic aesthetic model that has both clinical and historical significance. As such this book is essential reading for all those with an interest in the origins and fate of Modern Art.

Review

"Hagman invites the reader to join him on a fascinating and audacious psychoanalytic tour of the minds of significant artists of the 19th and 20th Centuries. Tracing their personal histories he demonstrates how psychological factors contribute to the ‘aesthetic resonance’ in works of art and architecture. An innovative contribution to the dual fields of art and psychoanalysis. The Artist’s Mind is an engaging read." - Joy Schaverien, Jungian Analyst and Visiting Professor in Art Psychotherapy at Leeds Metropolitan University, UK, and author of The Revealing Image

"In his second book Hagman pursues the development of a novel theory about aesthetics and creativity from self psychology and relational perspectives. He sees aesthetic experience as rooted in idealization of early attachment of the infant to his mother. In the present work he expands his ingenious formulations to Modern art which encourages personal idiosyncrasies, subjective expression, and aggressive abandonment of tradition. In this thoughtful and well researched text, he illustrates his theory by a detailed examination of a number of well known painters including, Degas, Bonnard, Duchamp, Pollock and Warhol. The list is extensive enough to enrich our understanding and appreciation of varied and at times opposing attitudes towards the process of artistic creation." - Francis Baudry, New York Psychoanalytic Institute, USA

"The author's psychoanalytic readings of the eight artists are compelling like princesses in a fairy tale, each of whom is 'more beautiful than the last.'" - Ellen Dissanayake, author of Art and Intimacy and Homo Aestheticus

"The Artist's Mind offers a vitalizing, new analytic perspective on the importance of aesthetics and art as a 'dialogue with the world,' shedding light on the evolution of modern art through the lives and works of major 20th century artists, and expanding our understanding of art into the 21st century." - Carol M. Press, author of The Dancing Self

About the Author

BRAVO from this artist!
By Melanie-Pearl
Thank God for gifting Mr. Hagman with the abililty to articulate such a book! Only a true artist and gifted therapist could so clearly write something this revealing. I know my own creative process because I "do" it. Still, I found new ideas, clarification and immense confirmation within the pages of this book.

If you are simply an artist who identifies with the work of modernists such as Bonnard, Matisse and Joseph Cornell---and you have struggled to understand/explain yourself---you should probably read this book. Without a psychology background some of the terminology might interrupt the flow so be prepared to keep a dictionary close by. If your experience upon reading is similar to mine, though, you will cherish and use your new vocabulary. Email me if you want to know more specific info.

What I learned from this book (I've read it twice in 1 week) will surely play out in my art and my clinical experience as a therapist. BRAVO!
