Love this little book

The pictures in this book are just terrific- clear, well-drawn, and simple in that pre-digital, 70's pen-and-ink style that makes me downright nostalgic. And there are a lot of things in the book that I didin't know I needed until I saw them- how about a tool cleaner? Put sand in a large container, mix in used oil, and store your tools in the sand/oil mix. They come out not just cleaned, but already oiled, too. Also inside: multiple composters, a cold frame, a root cellar, feeders, brooders, bird houses, chairs, benches, fencing, gates- and you can probably build them most of them just by looking at the pictures. It's like having a cool great-uncle teach you old farm tricks.

Fill in the blanks

If you build things, this book is great. It's not very detailed so you have to fill in the blanks, a beginning builder may need a little help. What a cool book for ideas on "farm life" type of items. Movable pig styes, horse sheds, chicken coops and even an incubator. My Aunt & Uncle owned this book when I was a teenager. My uncle built an incubator for me from the plans in this book. I gathered a dozen duck eggs from the haystack (after installing a dimmer switch to regulate the temperature from the light bulbs, because I couldn't find a thermostat) I incubated a dozen duck eggs, diligently turning them twice a day, watching the thermometer, keeping the water pan full. Every egg hatched. What a triumph! It is 20 years later and I still pull that book off the shelf. It's a keeper.

Coffee Table Book

I am a DIY type and was looking forward to this book. The project that initially caught my eye after going through the book was the Portable Horse Stable (pg. 151). The illustrations and list of materials seemed sound and the blurb about the project says the stable was designed at Rutgers University. The design is published by the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture as Plan 6082. After looking over the plans and materials in the book, I looked up the published plans from the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture to compare, and discovered where the plans diverge. The plan in the book leaves out many pieces of hardware that would not only make assembly easier but the structure more durable, and the dimensions in the book are also incorrect.

The book is a nice place to get ideas, but is lacking in the "how-to" if you want to actually build any of the items in the book. I would not recommend buying it for the plans. Check out publications at Home Depot or the library or online if you want to do that. This is mainly a well-illustration idea book. Check it out at the library, borrow it from a friend, and get your plans from other sources.

I use this text in my course "Water Supply and Wastewater Treatment" It includes some chapters beyond the scope of the course, but there is enough "good stuff" in the first 10-11 chapters to make it appropriate. I hope this text is updated every few years to include new material. The style is clear and has numerous graphics and problems to help the student.

Write-up on water quality is the best I have seen of several textbooks.

Book pages are some kind of clay-coated paper that has a slightly offensive chemical/process smell to it.

Magnificient book

This book is the best about the Iranian Qajar history I've ever seen. The unknown paintings, genealogical tables, beautiful design: all this makes it very important in understanding the great culture not only of Qajar but also of Zand, Afsharid and Safavid epochs. I wish there were more such books in the great world of not only iranian but of whole world's royalty.

About the Author
Daniel Singer (September 26, 1926 – December 2, 2000) was a socialist writer and journalist. He was best known for his articles for The Nation in the United States and for The Economist in Britain, serving for decades as a European correspondent for each magazine. Gore Vidal described Singer as "one of the best, and certainly the sanest, interpreters of things European for American readers", with a "Balzacian eye for human detail."

I am not sure I believe it

If I was judging this book only on the merits of the literary quality than it would be unfair to give it anything other than 5 stars. Though this book is one hell of an eye-witness to the waves of student revolts and strikes in Paris and all throughout France in 1968, Singer's thesis does not ring true to me.

According to Singer, when the France's industry ground to a halt as workers when into the streets in 1968, there was a chance for a workers revolution that would have made the October Revolution irrelevant for revolutionaries as a model of how to come to power. This was the General Strike that both Rosa Luxemburg, Leon Trotsky, and the wobblies thought would lead to the death knell of capitalism, and the beginning of a truly brave new world for all workers involved. The workers of one nation were united and smashing their chains outside the gates of the factories.

Reading Singer's description of how the extremely Stalinist Parti Communist Francais turned what could have been a renegotiation of workers place in French society into a fight solely over higher wages and slightly better conditions is enough to make any socialist or labor activist tear his or her hair out. As Singer describes the post strike wave flag waving hyper-patriotism of PCF frustration turns into out and out fury. The Communists are worse than fools--by completely betraying their founding principles they proved themselves to be cowards in the face of their own constituency.

Though I agree with Singer that the PCF as an organization acted with ridiculous short-sightedness during the strikes, it is difficult to swallow that a workers' revolution was just barely averted because of the Communists negotiating a deals which essentially bought off or bewildered the workers in the streets. There is precious little evidence that Singer produces to substantiate his claim that revolution had occurred. Singer is not able to show why exactly the workers were in the streets, and he seems a little to quick to attribute the creation of some workers councils to being the beginnings of (counter) government institutions. If this had been the case, even the Communists would have been smart enough to see it.

This is a major fault with the book, but it is still a fine read and one of the best eye witness accounts of a revolt that I have ever come across. The drama, the wackiness, and all the hope of a huge number of men in women in motion is absolutely breath taking and well worth the irritation of not seeing a thesis proved that I desperately would like to be true.

This is still very much worth the time to read though.

Turgid writing, but still very good.

I remember 1968 very well, living in Munich and graduating from the local high school that year, violent politics and demonstrations appeared to have become the norm. Radicalisation had even affected this school and MP's in their jeeps had rocks thrown at them. But back to this book. Daniel Singer is certainly a good writer, a very expansive vocabulary, perhaps too expansive for his own good. Some paragraphs appear to be stubs of thought, or perhaps he got lost himself, trying to fit the situation in France to fit his own personal filter of how events just had to take place. The events are really not set out in any kind of chronological order, it appears to be a treatise on the overall situation. It does not matter, Daniel Singer has passed away, and if you discuss these events with younger people, they get a vacant stare in their face. Like many intellectuals, he apparently thought himself good enough and I doubt if the book ever had a proofreader; he or she would have caught some of the confusion in the writing. In the end, a good read for doing research on that time period, make sure you read others, like Barbara Ehrenreich as well.

Good Eye Witness View, But Doubtful Analysis

Leftist author Daniel Singer wrote this book two years after the 1968 student and worker strikes in Paris. This book mixes solid eye-witness history with the author's profound regret that this uprising fell far short of revolution or radical changes in French society - although a more free and liberal France emerged, and De Gaulle's government eventually fell. Actually, despite class privileges France in 1968 was a society with many things right - including high living standards, good schools, free elections and many personal freedoms. Contrast that with war, poverty, starvation and food riots that existed in Russia in 1917 or China in the 1940's when communism took over. Some of the protesting French students promoted Mao, Che Guevera, and Castro - did these foolish youngsters really want secret police, one-party rule, and inept economies in the land of Voltaire, Sartre, Lafayette and Montesquieu? Singer didn't completely swallow the Communist line of the workers paradise, but he should have realized that revolutions often divert from promoted ideals and result in authoritarianism and repression.

A better France arguably emerged from these strikes, one that maintained ideals of liberty, fraternity and equality. Singer misses this point in his disappointing though interesting book.

One of Archer's Better Novels

With this novel, Jeffrey Archer lives up to his billing as a master storyteller. He quickly gets you involved with the story and situation, and makes you believe you are right there in the middle of the novel as one of the characters. Just when you think you have things figured out, he takes a hard turn with an ending you probably won’t see coming. If you have enjoyed Archer’s other books, I believe this one ranks up there with one of his best. I purchased this a while ago for just $2.99 during a Kindle promotion vs. its normal price of $9.99: I certainly believe I received more than $9.99 worth of entertainment value out of this one.

A clever tale by a master storyteller

This was another revisit to a book I had read a while ago prompted by an Amazon deal for a Kindle copy for pocket change. Once again I enjoyed revisiting a book I had enjoyed before and surprisingly there were only a few parts that I really remembered.

There are several parts to a pretty complex plot. At the beginning East-Ender Danny Cartwright proposes to his pregnant girlfriend, Beth Wilson and then goes out with Bernie, Beth's brother and Danny's best mate, to a pub to celebrate. There are four drunken men in the pub and one of them makes obscene suggestions to Beth and then picks a fight with Danny and Bernie. The outcome of the brawl is that Danny is stabbed in the leg by the leader of their opponents who then stabs Bernie fatally.

The twist in the tale is that the leader of the pack, who call themselves "the Musketeers", is an eminent and very clever lawyer who concocts a bogus story that Danny killed his best friend. Danny is arrested for murder and in court the Musketeers stick by their story and Danny is given a life sentence.

Archer then brings his own prison experience into play when he describes prison conditions and the developing personal relationship with his cellmates, especially with Nick Moncrieff, an intelligent and cultured heir to a knighthood who looks uncannily similar to Bernie. Nick helps Bernie to with his education and social skills and they become inseparable. This sets the scene for Danny's determination to seek revenge on each of the Musketeers.

It is a very entertaining story as Danny plots his revenge and as uses his new social and business skills to track down each Musketeer and establish a new life. Jeffrey Archer's books can never be called literary fiction but there are few authors of this genre who can beat him as a master storyteller of complex and entertaining plots.

The story line was good and kept your attention consistently

The story line was good and kept your attention consistently. However, I found it impossible to believe that all the people did not recognize Danny as an imposter. Also impossible to believe was the killer's steps from the murder scene to the bar, to his house, taking clothes off, showering, dressing and returning to the scene to call the police in some seven minutes!
