Opposing View of Reconstruction written in 1913
By MoTownStacks
The Facts of Reconstruction was written by Lynch in 1913 and contradicts a lot of the standard ideas about Reconstruction from the time period. Lynch was a self educated African American who wrote article for The Journal of Negro History in the early 1900's. He was a contemporary of W.E.DuBois. This book is an interesting alternate view, and may create a more balanced view of the post-war South.

A HISTORY OF RECONSTRUCTION WRITTEN BY A PARTICPANT
By Steven H Propp
John Roy Lynch (1847-1939) was the first African-American Speaker of the House in Mississippi. He was also one of the first African-Americans elected to the U.S House of Representatives during Reconstruction.

He wrote in the Preface to this 1913 book, "The author of this book is one of the few remaining links in the chain by which the present generation is connected with the reconstruction period---the most important and eventful period in our country's history... If, in writing this book the author shall have succeeded in placing before the public accurate and trustworthy information relative to Reconstruction, his highest ambition will have been fully gratified, his sense of justice entirely satisfied."

Here are some quotations from the book:

"(T)here was and still is a bond of sympathy between the two races at the South---a bond that the institution of slavery with all its horrors could not destroy, the Rebellion could not wipe out, Reconstruction could no efface, and subsequent events have not been able to change." (Pg. 23)
"'But,' said the Senator, 'could you have been elected without the votes of colored men? If you now vote against a colored man---who is in every way a fit and capable man for the position---simply because he is a colored man, would you expect those men to support you in the future?" (Pg. 64)
"(T)housands of Republicans (voted) the Democratic ticket merely as an indication of their dissatisfaction with the National Administration." (Pg. 116-117)
"That the poor whites of the ante-bellum period in most of the late slaveholding or reconstructed States are now the masters of the political situation in those States, is a fact that will not be questioned, disputed or denied by anyone who is well-informed, or who is familiar with the facts." (Pg. 124)'
"If a natural antipathy existed between the two races no law would be necessary to keep them apart. The law, then, against race intermarriage has a tendency to encourage and promote race intermixture, rather than to discourage and prevent it." (Pg. 242)
"The Republican Party emancipated (blacks) from physical bondage, for which he is grateful. It remains for the Democratic party to emancipate him from political bondage, for which he will be equally grateful." (Pg. 276)

Forgotten Mississippi Hero
By Robert Metzger
I had read much of Mr Lynch but never read or was even aware of this book. Mr Lynch lived in my home state and is a forgotten hero by many. I found the book outstanding in its succinct description. He makes the point that something was lost when his generation of Republican leaders died out or were driven out by the racist Democrsts in the South. I recommend this work to all people of all races.
