Building Character with True Stories from Nature, by Barbara A. Lewis

This flexible resource combines character education with analogies to powerful stories from nature. The heart of each of the book’s 25 lessons is an engaging story, written to kids, describing a particular animal or plant and its distinctive qualities. Busy classroom teachers will like this book’s accessibility and flexibility. Kids can read a story individually or in groups, or follow along as the teacher reads it aloud. Accompanying each story, teachers will find several activities—most of them quick, easy, and requiring few supplies—that further investigate animals or plants and the connections between their qualities and human behaviors. Every lesson examines several main character traits, providing starting points and sample questions for discussing and exploring analogies between events in nature and human acts of character. Features include a chart cross-referencing lessons to specific character traits and a list of further resources. Digital content contains more than 75 reproducible forms, a complete bonus lesson, and a color photograph of each animal and plant.

Review

2014 Teachers’ Choice Award Winner in the “For the Classroom” category by Learning Magazine!

“Barbara Lewis weaves factual information with down-to-earth, applicable activities and discussions to encourage students’ appreciation for nature, while building their power to observe and to understand people and their world as multi-dimensional. Throughout, Lewis is respectful of children’s capacity to discuss important issues and form their own opinions.”—Silvia Blitzer Golombek, Ph.D., senior vice president, Youth Service America

“Lewis introduces fascinating aspects of the natural world—its constructive and destructive power—to young students in a way that reaches beyond knowledge acquisition. She shows teachers how to build bridges to the inner worlds of children with analogical thinking, reflective questions, and thoughtful conversations that nourish not only their understanding but their agency. If you want to use learning as a way to develop your students’ character, intrinsic motivation, and an ethically grounded relationship with the world, this is the guide you need.”—Diane Stirling, professional development coordinator of CHARACTERplus® and coauthor of Character Education Connections for School, Home, and Community

Buy it, read it, use it
By J Rather
Barbara Lewis has taken 26 intriguing stories that I'd never heard before about animals and a few plants, and through use of clever analogies has created a book that I have put to good use in my family.

We have all heard of the story of the tortoise and the hare. It is not in this book. But the stories in this book are similar in that they are analogies--very good ones. Each story is clear and well-written. At the conclusion of each one, there are several enjoyable exercises for a teacher, parent, or grandparent (which is what I am) to use in teaching a valuable lesson. The book lives up to its title: "Building Character with True Stories from Nature." I recommend it to anyone that needs some good stories for children. I also think that any school that uses the book would be ahead in the teaching of character to young people. So buy it, read it, and use it.

A nice addition to the printed book is a CD with over a hundred pages that include handouts of the stories, activities, and quizzes.

Wonderful Teaching Tool
By Mr Greene
This latest book from Barbara Lewis is another educational and entertaining work from a great author. The book is a useable tool to help children (and adults) understand and develop good character traits. The illustration of various traits in the context of animals, plants, bugs, and fish, helps students remember these qualities. The listed activities are a useful way for students to internalize the qualities and understand how they play out in real life.

I would recommend this book to parents and teachers of elementary-aged children. It could also be adapted for the use of older students.
