developing them as individuals and as a very formidable (in all the best ways) couple.
By Gaele
Newly released in paper, The Courtship and The Duke and His Duchess are wonderfully fun prequel stories that detail the relationship between the Duke and Duchess of Windham, before they became the managing partners of their grown children and their relationships.

While The Duke and His Duchess is technically the second novella, I read these in order as presented, and this is a wonderful introduction to Percy and the young Esther, a thoroughly impertinent woman, and he can’t resist the challenge. Clever, determined and ever so self-assured, Percy is so busy proclaiming he will make Esther his, that he misses her rather subtle moves that show her iron will. Sweetly romantic and full of moments that just strike that ‘youthful ideal of romance’ as Percy counts their kisses, this introduction gives a glimpse into the couple they could become.

In The Courtship, a few years have passed from the early days, and Esther is managing four very young boys while Percy, as was the habit, was involved in his own affairs, not quite ignoring, but not sharing his life with her, or helping her with the boys. Of course, he has secrets, but rather than spend an eternity discussing the secrets and why he’s keeping them, Esther won’t allow too much division between them. Soon they do talk, as adults, with few to no recriminations and a re-alignment of their relationship.

Both stories bring the presence of both Percy and Esther into the forefront, while developing them as individuals and as a very formidable (in all the best ways) couple. Not all smooth sailing and happy ever afters, these two have overcome difficulties, learned that two heads are better and never forgot the initial reasons, attitudes and beliefs that brought them together.

I received an eArc copy of the title from the publisher via NetGalley for purpose of honest review. I was not compensated for this review: all conclusions are my own responsibility.

This set of books were a joy to read
By Jaci
This set of books were a joy to read. The Courtship shows how Percy and Esther meet and fall in love and The Duke and His Duchess takes place after they are married with all the joys and sorrows that married couples deal with. In the Courtship is was almost love at first sight for Percy and Esther. They meet at a house party where she is the poor relation who is ridiculed by the othe young ladies at the house party who are of higher rank and come from money. Percy is with his younger brother Anthony who are both younger sons of a Duke and are pursued like foxes at a hunt by all the debutantes attending. There are schemes, plots and traps a plenty at this particular house party, but Percy and Esther find their way and fall in love and go to their HAE. The Duke and His Duchess is the story of Percy and Esther after 5 years of marriage and 4 children, all boys. His brother Anthony is married. Percy's mother, the Duchess has passed away and his father the Duke is not doing well. His older brother, the heir has never been well and is getting worse year by year. Both Percy and Esther are feeling confused and unsure of each other. Esther is exhausted, stressed out and doesn’t feel she can talk to Percy anymore. Percy feels he doesn’t understand her anymore and feels like he is losing her. All the pressures of being parents and trying to keep their family members healthy and happy while being the same people the way they were when they were first married is not easy.

The Courtship is a wonderful romance novel and The Duke and His Duchess is the continuing story that has such touching, stunning emotion that made me cry. I know how Esther felt because I have had some of those same feelings in my life. Grace writes such a remarkable story that you will never want it to end.

Loved it - A Perfect and Realistic Love
By M. Rondeau
This was a total delight to read. Actually, it was two novella’s turned into one complete beginning to the Windham Family series. It sets the stage for a plethora of stories regarding the prolific progeny that Percival and Esther Windham’s marriage produced. But what THE DUKE AND HIS DUCHESS did for me was to show two people who were not perfect but whose love and respect for one another through thick and thin; gossip; betrayals; family sickness was so strong and so enduring that it is a love story for the ages.

Back from the Canadian and American wilderness, Percival (Percy) and his brother Anthony met Esther Himmelfarb at a house party where if gossips were correct their mother the Duchess of Windham had ordered her two younger sons to find themselves suitable brides. With Percy, known as something of a rake, he had noticed the girl without a title or dowry and was intrigued by her down to earth attitude and absence of the usual arsenal of feminine wiles of trapping a nobleman. Easy to talk to and lovely to boot Percy moved fast and their romance was brief and a whirlwind marriage followed.

Part two was the marriage five years later with Esther and Percy producing four children in the nursery and the reality of living along with others in the ducal estate with an aging duke on the verge of senility and the heir apparent (Percy’s brother Peter) not well. It was interesting that all was not sugar plums and fairy tales but Ms. Burrowes showed real life where the issues of not enough help would plague a mother (Esther) who was overloaded with the responsibility of four quick births, the exhaustion of nursing (they couldn’t afford a wet nurse), and keeping track of four rambunctious young boys.

Ms. Burrowes not only writes the most wonderful love stories but she does this with reality as well as great emotion. She shows where Esther is still in love with her handsome dashing soul mate, but truthfully is just plain exhausted. She also portrays Percy as loving and caring to the point where he visits an ex-mistress to question her about his wife’s health. Strange yes, but a proud man and very much in love with Esther that he would go to a source he knew Esther, should she find out, would be very upset.

Bottom line: Again Ms. Burrowes writes real and beautifully described romances with more than fluff and sex scenes. Every Burrowes book I’ve read is a keeper and resonates in my heart and mind long after the last page is turned. Simply a marvelous beginning to a fabulous series and family dynasty.
