About the Author
Clarissa C. Adkins Clarissa is YogaFit trained, RYT 200 (Registered Yoga Teacher), with a passion for the study of all styles of yoga, especially Ashtanga and Iyengar. Her background includes a BA in English from James Madison University (1997), teaching English in Japan, and learning yoga from her father starting at age 14. She spends time coordinating yoga classes, teaching yoga, and freelance writing. Much of her writing appears on Livestrong.com. In 2011, she celebrated her six-year anniversary as a yoga instructor. Olivette Baugh Robinson Olivette was born in Petersburg, Virginia, in 1925. She received a MA degree in Early Childhood Education from NYU in 1953. After enjoying a long career as the director of a day care center in Brooklyn, New York, Olivette discovered yoga. In 1994, she took the month-long teacher training course to become a certified Sivananda Yoga instructor. She began teaching yoga classes and chair yoga classes in senior centers in Queens, New York. Having moved to Midlothian, Virginia, she introduced chair yoga to one of the YMCAs in 2001. Olivette continues teaching yoga, chair yoga, gentle yoga, and kids yoga at YMCAs, a retirement community, and a senior center. At age 86, she feels blessed to be able to continue teaching yoga. Barbara Leaf Stewart Barbara has an MS in Physiology from Florida State University. During her thirty-year career in college teaching at J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College (Professor Emeritus), she worked on the national, regional, and local level advancing science education and teacher preparation. Her yoga practice began in 1985. Retirement gave her the opportunity to fulfill her long-term dream and complete the Teacher Training Course at the International Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Centre (RYT 200). Barbara currently teaches yoga in the Richmond, Virginia, region.

Chair Yoga for You

Yes, I do Chair Yoga at my local YMCA with the Silver Sneaker program.
I got the book when it first came out.
I now also do it in the evening about 7:00pm at home in my Dinning room the quitiest room and darkest room in my home. Sometimes I put on some relaxing music like Body & Soul relaxing moods or Body & Soul deep relaxation music.
Or I do it without music.
I put the book in front of me so as I can turn the pages do the yoga moves.
Since I have been doing this I have found that I no longer need my sleeping pills to go to sleep at night.
With doing the yoga at night it has helped calm me totally relax me so as can get plently of rest and sleep.
I have been doing it about 6 weeks now. I haven't had to take sleeping pills for about 10 days now.
I have and do truely enjoy the book along with my classes at my local YMCA with and thru the silver sneaker program...
You really should get the book and try it and see for yourself.
It really has helped me.

Finally, someone who understands what it means to be a 'senior'!

Let me set the stage...I'm in my 75th year, getting more portly by the week thanks to bad lungs that keep me from doing anything even faintly "aerobic". I investigated "yoga for seniors" on the internet and could not believe some of the postures I saw models demonstrating--feet apart, one hand in the air the other flat on the floor. Yeah, right! I don't know many people under 30 who could do that let along any of my 'senior' friends. Then I spotted this book on Amazon and the idea of doing yoga while seated in a chair appealed to me. I bought it, and now that I've been working with the book for a couple of months I think I'd have paid ten times the asking price if I'd known what a blessing this little gem would turn out to be. The book is beautifully organized with sections that explain the importance of breathing and relaxing and so forth while doing the postures, and is fully illustrated with models, male and female, showing exactly what is meant by the already clear instructions. I skimmed the whole book at first, just to get myself oriented and in doing so I encountered a really telling detail. One of the postures I'd encountered elsewhere, called variously "Eagle Arms" or just "Eagle" involves twisting the arms together in front of one's face. Impossible for a slightly chubby (or short-armed, or whatever my problem is) posture. But everywhere else I've seen it the assumption is that one will just do it. Here, following the description of the posture, the authors write "If this is not comfortable, Just place your right hand on your left shoulder...." And there's a photo of each of the two ways of doing this posture. Clearly these are people one can trust to not suggest doing things a senior is not likely to be able to do. I can't thank the authors enough. I started with the "warm-up" routine...20 postures in all...and after a few days of practicing them with the book propped up in front of me I made myself a 'cheat sheet' with shortened descriptions so I wouldn't have to turn pages. I do that 25+ minutes every morning and it is changing my life! Thank you, thank you, thank you!

Chair Yoga for You arrived in great condition. The exercises are helpful for the fitness class I lead of senior citizens. The exercises are doable and practical. I have been using it for ideas since the book arrived.
