A treasure for history fans

I love this book! The author collected writings from the earliest white explorers and settlers of Kentucky. The spelling and syntax haven't been "corrected," which really helps bring the writings to life. Nevertheless, their writings (often in the form of journals) are easy to read and understand: the travelers' hardships, their fears, their suffering and their determination to better their fortunes (either by settling or claiming land to sell to settlers). Kentucky, which became a state in 1792, was an early gateway to the west. These are voices from the past, and since I know the state well, it's exciting to me to envision their travels and the birth of the communities they describe, including Limestone (today's Maysville), Boonesboro, the Bluegrass, Louisville and others. Despite my enthusiasm, it's probably a book I think is best suited for history lovers like me!

A wonderful overview of the many ways that people went out to the new territories. Not just the folks with a couple of pack horses, but families moving their entire farm and livestock via flatboats. And oh, yes - the wealthy British "tourists" who went there just to see what it was like!
