A First Book About Divali Brightly Illustrated and Told in Verse

Readers will find a well-produced hard-bound book, about 9 x 12, with quality cover, heavy paper, and printing that should stand up to a lot of wear. Too big for very little readers to hold in their own hands (compared to board books) but a lovely reason for a snuggle-read together with family. It is written by a mother (pictures)/daughter (text) team and may be a first for both of them.

Among the features I liked:

--every page of print has a facing full page, full color illustration

--the colors are bright & eye catching

--there's lots of pictorial detail on every page about which families can talk and enrich the story

--the basic elements of the story, plus the virtues it celebrates, and some of today's traditions are all included so it covers a lot as an introduction to this wonderful holiday/holy day.

However, readers should be aware that while there are some beautiful lines, such as "What was quiet, now could sing," the author could have a much firmer grip on metre and a better ear for sound. There are verses that do not read aloud well, such as

"This started an epic battle
As Rama had to find his wife
So with the help of Hanuman and Laksmana
He set off to save her life.

The battle was intense and magical
When Rama and Raavana finally did meet
With Rama's courage and strength
Raavana was left in defeat."

Children like rhymes & may enjoy this form more than they would prose, however.

Buyers also should expect they will need to enrich the story with details such as who Hanuman was, what he did in the rescue of Sita, how Raavana tricked Sita, and how Sita's capitivity brought darkness to the world, so celebrating with light is beautiful & appropriate. Never-the-less, this might be a young child's very first book about Divali and as such is not comprehensive (if any single book really could be!). Further, enriching a story can be a great pleasure for the family.

Just accidently found this book online, when I was looking for a gift for my 3 year old niece who has never seen a Diwali from close quarters as she is born & brought up in US. And I must say, this is one of the best written children's book on Diwali.. very simple language with rhyme scheme that any kid (especially my niece) would love to hear & repeat cutely..

Even my sister loves reading this book for her daughter as this makes her feeding job easy but she hates the time when my niece goes "One more time!!!" and needless to say that my niece does that quite often..

Great Children's book

This book seems to be sold out quite often. I found it on the author's website [...] and it shipped the next day. My daughter loves the book. It has amazing illustrations and the simplicity with which the story is told captures her attention really well. I even left a comment for the author and she was very gracious to sign it for my daughter. I highly recommend it. I wish Sana writes another book on Durga Puja.

Really Helped Out

Great for a car trip!

Being a hyper active parent I try to provide educational material for my 10 year old to read when we take long car trips. I first found the Gardner book on cyphers but some of the cyphers in later chapters he had trouble doing. Rather than have him get discouraged and give up I looked for additional material to help him out. Then I found this book. Whats great is that if he gets stuck, he can just look up the solution! Its perhaps more fun to do the cyphers with him but that's not always possible. That's when this book becomes essential.

And for such a cheap price, it's an easy choice to make.

Enjoyable read!

This is the 3rd book in the Oath Trilogy and I found it enjoyable. With the characters could have used a bit more depth, Colyne was a wonderful hero but lacked a bit of that Scottish fire and ruggedness that I love so much. The chemistry between the hero and heroine was good, and the story held my interest.

Ms Cosby does it again in book 3 of Oath trilogy with another riveting fast paced sizzling adventure that I could not put down!

This is the third book in the Oath trilogy by Diana Cosby which I have read and loved each and everyone and this An Oath Sworn was no different. Another riveting fast paced read, lined with adventure, murder, mystery abduction, deceit, betrayal and romance that sizzles.

Scotland 1299

Lady Marie Alesia Serouge escapes who had been kidnapped by the evil and corrupt English Duke Renard in Scotland. Marie is the French King Philip's bastard daughter. King Phillip supporting Scotland as the English want it to look as rebel Scots did it to get King Phillips and France to no longer support Scotland. On her escape she sees a man had been shot by the arrow and also pursued by the same English men. As Marie is also a healer so it's in her nature to help the injured, the man is non other then Colyne MacKerran, Earl of Strathcliff as readers of this series will remember from An Oath Taken as his heart was broken when Elizabet chose Nicolas as her husband instead of him.

They both have secret and ironically they don't realize how they both involve each other. As due to being a daughter of the King Marie is fearful and gives her middle name so Colyne has no idea who Marie really is. As the English are trying to make it look to make at as the Scot's are doing all these evil deeds and bloodshed when it is the English doing it. Colyne had a letter from Robert the Bruce explaining this for King Phillip, he believes Marie is a mercenary names Alesia. Marie is tired of men only want her for financial gains, titles and lands due to her stations. Colyne is the first man to care for her for herself although the she is an independent beautiful woman. Colyne does not share his knowledge with Marie either plus he ironically has men looking for King Phillip's abducted daughter.

Also as things get heated Colyne does not realize that Marie also has a betrothed but things are not what they seem to be and there is a traitor amongst King Phillip's trusted close circle. Marie has a lot of reasons to keep the truth from Colyne but one is to save his life as she know her father with never except him as a suitor.

Lots of plots within plots in the this marvelous fast moving tale with lots of twists and turns that will keep you at the edge of your seat. Will poor Colyne just have his heart ripped apart and broken again? Will sad Marie have to accept a political loveless marriage as many nobles do? You will have to read and found out in this phenomenal story. I absolutely loved this captivating story and a lot of heart wrenching moments for this couple. I highly recommend this action packed, breath taking, spectacular read! It actually makes me sad that this is the last book in An Oath trilogy which I have absolutely love them all. Highly recommend an Oath Sworn you won't be able to put it down! It is that amazing!

Came across more English than Scottish...

Having really enjoyed Book 2, An Oath Broken, I was very excited to receive an ARC via NetGalley of the last book in this trilogy, An Oath Sworn. Unfortunately, my personal oath to read/review every ARC I receive came very close to being broken. At 60% I was struggling to finish. What was missing? A strong Scottish factor for one. Despite his occasional brogue, this Scottish hero’s mannerism came across too English. Maybe it was because he was too much of a gentleman and not enough of a claymore swinging rogue. Don’t get me wrong. He was no girly man. He was quick to fight/protect the heroine, but somehow he didn’t seem as rugged as the hero in Book 2.

The heroine, who is supposed to be French, also came across too English. Since I am a stickler for characters matching how they are portrayed, I found this somewhat distracting.

What else caught my attention? At times, I felt I was told but did not feel what was happening. Equally frustrating there were plenty of times I did. I.e., the author, instead of describing their emotions, would just say he then kissed her passionately then continued with the story. Inconsistency in an author’s writing style is like fingernails down a chalkboard for this reviewer. Maybe the fault lies with editors using their pens like claymores to cut back the page length. Anyway, it was so subtle maybe it will go unnoticed by most other readers.

Yes, near the end there was quite a bit of life-threatening drama and a big plot twist. I do think An Oath Sworn will appeal to many avid Scottish romance enthusiasts. For me, the writing style and characters were simply not as engaging as I’ve come to expect from this author. It’s almost like the book synopsis conveyed this romantic tale better than the actual book itself.

A Rich Feast of Letters, Reviews and Writings

The beauty of this book is that so many letters, reviews, interviews etc. about/by so many artists are conveniently gathered in one place. On the whole, there isn't anything in here that you can't find elsewhere, such as in biographies of the individual artists. For example the letters contained in the opening section on "Post-Impressionism" from both Cezanne and Van Gogh are included in just about every biography on them.

The over-riding reason for buying this book is that so many are collected together. So, even for an artist that you might not like enough to go out and buy their biography, atleast you get an insight in to their thoughts/motives etc. In some cases this may spark your interest in a previously less favoured artist and appreciate their works from a new perspective.

Chipp covers all the main "isms" of modern art from Post-Impressionism (Cezanne) onwards. Each movement opens with a treatise detailing the main theories/artists/concepts/techniques that made it unique. This is followed by a comprehensive selection of articles/letters/interviews etc. concerning the main players i.e. the section of Expressionism includes writings from Nolde, Kandinsky, Kokoschka, Kirchner, Marc, Klee and Beckmann. One of my favourite pieces is by Stuart Davis. He's responding to a critic's recent review..."in your review you speak of your enthusiasm for my work and call me a "swell American painter". This attitude on your part I heartily approve, but you further state that my style is French and that if Picasso had never lived I would have had to think out a style of my own. Now is that nice Mr. McBride?" and off Davis goes in his defence. Superb.

Rather than reading about these various "isms" via the well meaning but often biased views of a expert art historian, here you get the views from the artists themselves.

For any art historians dealing with the modern art period this book has to be essential. And for general appreciators of art, as well as artists themselves, this book contains a wealth of information, and pays dividends to both intense study or just random browsing.

Since it's first publication in 1968 this book has formed the foundation of any respectable art library. I just checked the bibliography of more recent books on art history - this book is referenced extensively. In my opinion, if anyone is looking for an interesting and enjoyable introduction to the world of "Modern Art" they could do a lot worse than start here. And given the way that any one "ism" owes it's existence to the "isms" that came before it*, this almost reads like a novel.

*Regardless of Dali's utterances about Surrealism being a unique movement, unfounded by anything that came before, just go and have a look at the works of Hieronymous Bosch to see that wasn't the case.

In The Artist's Own Words

This is a great collection of letters and written papers by many famous artists. Easy to read, very insightful. Great way to learn what the artists themselves actually thought about their works. You will find writings from Van Gogh to Willem De Kooning.
If you want to familiarize yourself with the works of many Modern artists, this is a good place to start. Theories of Modern Art: A Source Book by Artists and Critics (California Studies in the History of Art)

Theories of Modern Art Revisited

Because my first copy from 1968 is dog-eared and worn, I am back to purchase a second copy of Theories of Modern Art by Herschel B. Chipp. Originally, the book was required reading for a college course I took in Philosopy of Art. It is replete with insights into the thoughts and processes of making art by the giants of modern art and their critics, in the form of original quotes and letters. The various schools of art are represented, i.e. post-impressionism, symbolism and other subjective tendencies, fauvism and expressionism, cubism, futurism, neo-plasticism and constructivism, dada, surrealism and contemporary art (including both the Americans and Europeans). One comes away from this book with the feeling of knowing the artists personally. I highly recommend this source book to which you will find yourself returning, as to an old friend, as I have, time after time.
