Disturbing and touching

This is a beautiful 2-act play about two kids in nowhere, Texas. It can be staged anywhere from a living room to a concert hall. It doesn't require much of a set, and only has two actors, a man and a woman, both young. This is a perfect play for college students.

About the Author
Tomlinson Holman is President of TMH Corporation and one of the prominent figures in audio today. He is widely known for his development of new products and processes in the field of audio and video, including the THX Sound System, Home THX (with his patents licensed to more than 45 companies), and the THX Digital Mastering program developed while he was Corporate Technical Director at Lucasfilm, Ltd. He has won career achievement awards from CAS and the Custom Electronics Design and Installation Association. Mr. Holman is a Fellow of the Audio Engineering Society, the British Kinematograph Sound and Television Society, and the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers. He is Co-Chairman of the Audio Engineering Society Task Force on High-Capacity Audio.

MIXING FOR SURROUND? IT'S TRICKY BUT IT'S DOABLE.

So LOGIC and CUBASE offer a "free" option for mixing in surround, but to do it in PROTOOLS you have to buy PROTOOLS HD, or go back in time and get an archair PROTOOLS TDM system. Oh well. Good to know. There is much work to be done, and I'd better start doing the work. But this book is a good start. THere's also an awesome ProTools app called "spanner" from a guy in Australia / New Zealand, search YouTube for "spanner" and be prepared to see something awesome.

5.1 Channel Surround Sound: Up and Running

It is true that surround sound is a topic that has only recently been resubmitted to the scholarly and professional community for reconsideration. A book on this topic, especially by an accomplished expert such as Holman, should be welcomed. It is somewhat disappointing therefore that his efforts fall short and his book reads like a direct outcome of introductory lectures on the subject. There is a certain lack of precision and lucidity in its structure and format. Scholarly references have been almost completely omitted despite the fact that the professional world has been concerned with surround sound for years now and there are many publications available in form of technical papers; instead there is a long list of soon to be outdated addresses and phone numbers of respective manufacturers of surround sound equipment. Many technical terms are mentioned -- often quite casually, but very few explained in detail; information tends to be scattered and redundant without ever reaching a particular depth. I would recommend this book to a novice in sound recording if it weren't for the many terms that lack thorough explanation. It seems regrettable that what should have remained an introductory paper on the topic was artificially padded to become a book.

Excellent introduction to surround sound. Tom is definitely more than a great teacher and legendary figure that I had the opportunity to meet at the IIM-Paris (Institut International du Multimédia)... he's also a very good writer ! Buy his book, it's a great one !

John W. Berry is Emeritus Professor of Psychology at Queen's University, Kingston, Canada, and Research Professor in the National Research University Higher School of Economics, Moscow.

Marshall Segall is Professor Emeritus of Social and Political Psychology in the Maxwell School at Syracuse University. He has also taught at Columbia University, the State University of Iowa and Makerere University in Uganda. He has co-authored a number of textbooks and monographs on cross-cultural psychology and served as President of the International Association for Cross Cultural Psychology and President for the Interdisciplinary Society for Cross-Cultural Research.

Pierre R. Dasen is Professor Emeritus of Anthropology of Education and Cross-cultural Psychology at the Faculty of Psychology and Education of the University of Geneva.He studied developmental psychology in Geneva, was an assistant to J. Piaget, and received a PhD from the Australian National University. He studied the cognitive development of Aboriginal children in Australia, Inuit in Canada, Baoule in Cote d Ivoire, and Kikuyu in Kenya; he has also contributed to research in cognitive anthropology among the Yupno of Papua-New-Guinea, and in Bali. His research topics have included visual perception, the development of sensori-motor intelligence, the causes and effects of malnutrition, the development of concrete operations as a function of eco-cultural variables and daily activities, defi nitions of intelligence, number systems, and spatial orientation. He has also been concerned with intercultural education, and in particular with the access of illegal migrant adolescents to professional training. His main interests are in everyday cognition, informal education, and parental ethnotheories, and his current research in India, Nepal, and Indonesia is on spatial language and cognitive development.

Ype H. Poortinga is part-time Professor of Cross-Cultural Psychology at Tilburg University in the Netherlands and at the University of Leuven in Belgium.

Waste of time and money

This book arrived in the condition described but it took so long to get here that I am now three weeks into a six week class and have had to find alternative means of access to the same copy up until now. I am probably no longer going to be purchasing from the marketplace or second vendors as a result of this experience and another one from another vendor.

The description of the filter designs from the basic math is very good and the accompanying software in the book is also ...

Digital Signal Processing has been around since the early 60's in integrated circuit design. And also in software( FORTRAN ) since the 70's. And today you can get several books on DSP done in C and C++ with CDs full of the source code. But the description and the software design hasn't improved since the early 1990s when this book was written.

I needed a decent book on digital filters in C for some mobile work I'm doing and this one fit the bill. The description of the filter designs from the basic math is very good and the accompanying software in the book is also very good. There is only one drawback for this book, the source code is on a 51/4" floppy, the premier medium of the day. But, since the total cost is only a few bucks, how can you complain when currently published books having C code cost well over $100($150 in some cases). So, check your wallet and see if you can find someone with an early 2000s computer having a floppy drive and see if the floppy will fit. Be aware though, floppies tend to be self erasing with a mean lifetime under 10 years. In my professional opinion, most of the files will not be completely readable on the old floppy drives.

Not Just for Millennials!

“Are you a special snowflake? Do you love networking to advance your career? Have you never wasted a fresh new day surfing the internet? Ugh. This book is not for you. Please go away.

“This book is for the rest of us. These comics document the wasting of entire beautiful weekends on the internet, the unbearable agony of holding hands on the street with a gorgeous guy, dreaming all day of getting home and back into pajamas, and wondering when, exactly, this adulthood thing begins. In other words, the horrors and awkwardness of young modern life.”

I’m 37 years old (emphasis on OLD) and am still waiting for the day when it feels like I’ve crossed over into adulthood. My lack of human kids doesn’t help, but you’d think my dog kids (both rescue and foster) would help get me at least halfway there. But I prefer sweatpants to jeans (skirts and slacks, what?), never carry a purse (though will stoop to a tote bag if absolutely necessary, like when begging fistfuls of free sample meds from the dermatologist), and wear sports bras exclusively (but only if I must). Last summer our water got shut off for a day because I didn’t realize that the city, in its infinite wisdom (i.e. laziness), had ceased its direct deposit payment plan and now requires all bills to be paid by cash or check. I have a bachelor’s degree that’s probably too old to mean anything anymore, and am still trying to figure out what I want to do when I grow up/with my life.

In short, Sarah Andersen might be a Millennial, but I can still relate to much of what’s in ADULTHOOD IS A MYTH.

The cartoons are pretty rad, in an understated way, and reminiscent of HYPERBOLE AND A HALF (though maybe with less depression and melancholy). If you’re not already familiar with Sarah’s Scribbles, there’s a tumblr you can check out to get the feel for it. Warning: you will find yourself in a bottomless timesuck of the sort that Andersen’s likely to write about.

This book would make an excellent gift for a) new college graduates; b) your partner who would rather spend New Year’s bingeing on Netflix and takeout than putting on pants/a happy face and venturing out into the world; c) your friend the perpetual man- (or woman-) child; d) anyone who has a pulse.

This just came in the mail and I had to read the whole thing. I love and appreciate this comic. I can relate to her character in so many ways, and she's cute. I am so excited Sarah Andersen put this book together.

Beginning with what we know of oenology in ancient Egypt and Greece, the text travels up to the 21st century, citing, for example, countries that produced the "most exciting wines" of 2003. Along the way, famed wine writer Johnson revisits the ongoing debate of who is responsible for introducing vineyards into France, reveals that the coupling of bottle and cork in the 17th century allowed wine to age properly and recalls Thomas Jefferson declaring that wine was "the only antidote to the bane of whiskey." Sidebars throughout relate sprightly anecdotes, such as the story of Magellan stocking his ships for the 1519–1521 circumnavigation of the globe (he spent more on sherry than he did on armaments—and then got himself killed en route). Some 125 maps and illustrations in lush color and b&w depict everything from a 5,000-year-old panel that is the first known illustration of wine drinking to a striking photo of a hyper-modernistic winery in Spain. While necessarily less comprehensive than the initial edition, this version is a thorough survey of the elixir that, as Johnson says, owes its popularity to its power to banish care.

How about a little history with that glass of wine...

I have just begun perusing this book. It's really not a tome one reads cover to cover. One goes back and forth. It's really a good reference work if one needs to know a little about the history of wine. Since I write historical fiction, it's a good book to have around. After all, the peoples of history drank lots of the liquid we call wine. It is a ceremonial as well as social drink.

Since one of the stories I tell as a storyteller is about Medea, it was very interesting to learn that the cultivation of wine came from her part of the world, Colchis, which is now Georgia. I think of Medea as a chemist, so I now wonder if this ancient myth's location had anything to do with the cultivation and fermenting of wine. Was it she who took this knowledge to the Mediterranean when she escaped with Jason to that location? We can only speculate. I keep reading this book with each glass of wine I take in the evenings.

Coffee Table Textbook on Wine

This is a classic text on the history of wine, and it is out-of-print! Though required for a college class, it is well written by one of the few people who the subject good enough to get it right. The illustrated edition is worth the extra cost not only for the informational photographs, but also for the history of wine as told through artwork from around the world! Many classic paintings are reproduced in the volume, which makes this book at home on the coffee table not the library!

As good as a glass of wine

Many people consider "useless culture" to have knowledge about certain issues. Many would claim: "Why do I have to know about wine?". The answer is very simple, indeed. Wine is part of the culture of a people and more than being a drink it is a form of art.

Considering the wine a form of useful knowledge and a form of art, "The sorty of wine" is a masterpiece on the subject. It is also written in such a way you may feel you are part of the trips Mr. Johnson did in order to come up with this brilliant work. A book for the lovers of this beverage that is more than something to drink, it is a pleasure for the soul.

In this case at 9 years old, the patient would require a parent or legal guardian to consent for her. ‘Gillick Competence’ allows for a child up to the age of eighteen to make their own decision regarding their care. However, the dentist must carefully assess that all the criteria for valid consent detailed in question four are present. There is particular emphasis placed on the patient’s ability to understand and retain all the information given and communicate their reasoned decision. ‘Gillick Competence’ will be more relevant for scenarios where the child in question is slightly older. The ethical and legal responsibility to respect children as well as those who support them is essential in establishing strong professional relationships. In this particular situation explaining the options and offering choices will help the parents to make their decisions appropriately after understanding what’s on offer, which in turn will increase the likelihood of co-operation, whichever option is finally decided upon. For Example: “The dentist should tell the family about the options and explain how the pain can be controlled with analgesics and a simple dressing. He /she should explain that it may be wise to slowly introduce Rebecca to dental care so that she becomes familiar with the dental environment before starting treatment.
